How many mods can a game have before reaching a critical mass? At least oneLegend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildplayer appears to be exploring those possibilities, judging from a recent video. WhileBreath of the Wildmodshave been getting progressively more ambitious for weeks now, they’ve at least existed within a vacuum, separated from others' creations so that the land of Hyrule still appears familiar, if not a little unusual.
That all changes with the latestLegend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildmod video, which is more of a compilation of several different changes rather than one focused offering. In it, Link, now quite clearly a protagonist from the world ofMinecraft, attempts to defeat a Hinox, who are recurring ogre-like enemies scattered throughout Hyrule in the latest iteration of theLegend of Zeldaseries. Only, this Hinox is a familiar face who just seems out of place - perhaps he’s just upset he has clearly forgotten where his swamp is.
That’s right - inexplicably, someone decided that what the land of Hyrule really needed was some more Shrek. Link, equipped with a Spongebob Squarepants backpack, manages to dispatch the ogre in what could be argued as a genuinely unsettling scene, with Shrek falling to his knees and coalescing into a black silhouette before evaporating into nothingness. Luckily, in what can only be described as an tone-appropriate sequence, the player is then picked up by Epona - now modified to be Thomas the Tank Engine, ofSkyrimandFallout 4modfame - and marches valiantly toward their next challenge.
At this point, it becomes debatable whether or not the game is reallyBreath of the Wildanymore - although, even if it really isn’t, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Players being able to express themselves creatively is always a plus for content creators, streamers, and other community members who like to contribute to a game’s longevity, and with aBreath of the Wildsequelfar away, preserving the game’s incredible achievements, even with memes, is probably well worth it while fans wait for the next one.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildis available now for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
