Nintendo’sE3 2017showcase has brought no shortage of first-party announcements for the platform, with the return of popular figureheads likeKirbyandMetroid. The Japan-based company has also just announced a brand newYoshititle that is being built from the ground-up for the Nintendo Switch. Simply calledYoshi, the lovable dino will feature in what looks to be a very creative platformer, complete with brand new diorama-inspired environments and clever puzzles.

As the trailer demonstrates,YoshiforNintendo Switchwill feature more than just traditional 2D sidescrolling. Each stage will have two sides to it, allowing Yoshi to traverse a world with more depth, aim his eggs at foes from the varying locations, and even flip the entire world around to discover an entirely new perspective. This will be required to solve puzzles as players progress through the game, and the full 3D environment will occasionally break out and force players to think fast.

Gamers can take a look atYoshiin the trailer below:

As players probably guessed by the existence of a red Yoshi joining up with our green hero, players will be able to team up with a friend to jump, run, and tongue-grab their way through the game in its entirety. Based on the verbiage of the trailer’s official description, it looks like the game will be limited to a two player experience, so it won’t exactly be a party game centerpiece. That being said, the new visual direction look great, andYoshifans are sure to be excited at the evolution from the equally cuteYoshi’s Woolly World.

Nintendo couldn’t give an exact release date for the upcoming platformer, but did confirm thatYoshiwould arrive sometime in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. That’s more of a confirmed date than some of the console’s other titles received, with games likeMetroid Prime 4and anewPokemonRPGtitle being announced as ‘in development’ without any kind of release window. When it comes to 2018 platformers, it looks likeYoshiwill have to hold down the fort withKirby.
