World of Warcraftjust surprised players by announcing the next three expansion packs during BlizzCon. TitledThe War Within,Midnight, andThe Last Titan, these three content updates are a part of The Worldsoul Saga–the new multi-expansion storytelling experience inWorld of Warcraft.
Blizzard President Mike Ybarra had previously confirmed theWarcraftfranchise had the most to show off this year at BlizzCon. Between the launch ofWarcraft Rumble, new content forHearthstone, and an expected announcement for the nextWorld of Warcraftexpansion, fans had high expectations going into the convention.
However, World of Warcraft showed much more than just the next expansion. During the presentation,WoWexecutive creative director Chris Metzenintroduced players to the Worldsoul Saga–a new three-expansion storyline that begins next year. This narrative starts withWorld of Warcraft: The War Withinin 2024, and will continue inWorld of Warcraft: MidnightandWorld of Warcraft: The Last Titanafterward.
From Metzen’s words during the announcement, theseWorld of Warcraftexpansions may be smaller than previous releases have been. It alsoseemsDragonflightPatch 10.2 may be the last major patch of the expansion, withThe War Withindropping sometime next year. It remains to be seen how exactly the release schedule will work, but it sounds like there will be smallerWoWexpansions more often, rather than bigger ones every two years.
Players can expect to learn War Withinduring the rest of BlizzCon, as well as over the next several months as the story ofDragonflightwraps up in Patch 10.2 and beyond. ThoughMidnightandThe Last Titanmay not get new information right away, players will certainly see more hints of these upcoming storylines asThe War Withinplays out.
