Star Wars’next theatrical release,The Mandalorian and Grogu, is gaining a lot of hype after footage was shown yesterday atStar WarsCelebration 2025, but fans still hate the film’s title. The Mandalorian and Groguwas announced early in 2024 and is set to take place after the events ofThe Mandalorianseason 3. Not much is known about the plot at this point, but it’s clear that Din Djarin and Grogu are still working with the New Republic out of Adelphi Base.

While plot details still aren’t clear, thefirst footage fromThe Mandalorian and Grogu—which was seen live from Japan byScreenRant’s very own Molly Brizzell and James Hunt—confirmed much of what had already been rumored about the film. This includesthe appearance of Sigourney Weaveras a New Republic official. Despite all this, the title still continues to receive a backlash in the fan community; many are complaining it’s too simplistic, reflecting an annoying trend seen in titles likeAndor,Ahsoka, andObi-Wan Kenobi. What’s going on?

Lucasfilm Understand That Character Names Are Powerful Brands

Character Names Hold Weight Within Media

Lucasfilm continues to name their shows and movies after their characters for a very simple reason;the character names are recognizable.Star Warshas created so many iconic and beloved characters in the nearly 50 years since it first graced our screens, so much so that there are aspects ofStar Warsthat have just made their way into our zeitgeist. It’s at a point where people don’t have to be familiar withStar Warsat all to know what the Force or lightsabers are.

The same goes for other character names, like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Whether someone was a fan of the original or prequel trilogies, it’s likely they know who the character is and may be interested in seeing a solo adventure centered around that character. This trend can also be attributed to the success of franchises like Marvel who name their titles after their main characters, especially in the franchise’s early stages. WithStar Warsstill establishing its brand on the Disney+ side of things, it’s not surprising that it’s relying on the names of its most beloved characters.

Star Wars Fans Are Disappointed With The Formula

It’s Time For More Creativity

SinceThe Mandalorianfirst premiered, it was clear that there was a severe lack of any kind of creativity when it came to naming Lucasfilm shows. It’s disappointing that this simplistic, and frankly boring formula has continued withThe Mandalorian and Grogu. With great titles already established in the franchise likeThe Empire Strikes BackandRevenge of the Sith, it’s hard to believe that the best Lucasfilm could come up with isThe Mandalorian and Grogu.

This one makes a measure of business sense given the brands involved; that said, we’re hoping Lucasfilm hear the comments and start switching things up a little. With movies by Taika Waititi and Dave Filoni on the way that are still unnamed, there’s still hope for something more creative. While fans can still be disappointed in the titleThe Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s no doubt that we cannot wait for the film to be released on June 11, 2025.
