Every so often, an indie game comes out and somehow manages to impact the gaming industry so hard that it changes the shape of a genre forever, and it’s pretty fair to say thatHadesdid that back in 2020. Taking onthe roguelike genreand delivering some of the most intuitive and satisfying mechanics its ever seen,Hadeshas become the gold standard for a roguelike game. That’s a standard that its upcoming sequel,Hades 2, will have a hard time trying to live up to.

Announced during the2022 Game Awardsjust a month ago,Hades 2is taking the phenomenal groundwork laid byHadesand expanding on it in some big ways. This time around, players are taking control of another Greek mythology deep-cut in the form of Melinoe, who is tasked with stopping the Titan Chronos from escaping his prison and wreaking havoc on Olympus. Though it’s only just been announced, fans should see more fromHades 2in 2023.

Everything Revealed About Hades 2 So Far

With just one trailer released so far,Hades 2fans don’t have too much to go on right now, but the trailer does give out some key details. Players will be controllingMelinoe, the daughter of Persephone and Zeus. Melinoe has seemingly spent her life training under Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft and necromancy. Melinoe finally gets to put these years of training into practice when Chronos, the Titan father of Zeus and ancestor to most of the Greek pantheon, escapes from his eternal bonds in the underworld. Now it’s up to Melinoe to defeat Chronos, and possibly some of his Titan brethren, before he can destroy Mount Olympus and wage war on its gods.

Based on the trailer, it seems as thoughHades 2will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor pretty closely when it comes to gameplay. The same isometric perspective is being used, the speed of combat looks about the same, and the player will once again have access to a whole host of abilities, with most of them presumably being magic-based thanks to Hecate.Hades 2is also set to introduce a new host of Greek gods and goddesses, includingNemesis the goddess of retribution, the sun god Apollo, and the mysterious Dora, who is given the title “Listless Shade.” Much like in the first game, these characters will help Melinoe in her journey by imbuing her with their powers.
