However,Until Dawnhas an open endingas the final scene shows a car pulling into the driveway of the home from which the main characters had just escaped,hinting that the murderous time loop will restart with the arrival of these new victims.
In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, Sandberg gave a cautious response about creating aUntil Dawnsequel. While he stated thathe is “always open to anything,” he expressed hesitancy about jumping into a second movie, which is a general feeling he has with any completed project. Sandberg emphasized thatUntil Dawnoffers plenty of opportunities to continue the story as one could do nearly “anything” with it. Check out his response below:
I’m always open to anything. I just want to focus on one movie, get it done, and then take a break to catch my breath before seeing what happens. But, for sure, you could do much more withUntil Dawn. You could again have different horror genres involving another group of people. You could do almost anything with this, so it’s certainly possible.
But whenever I finish a movie, I feel like I never want to do a movie again. (Laughs.) It’s such a challenge, and it’s so tough. There’s so much anxiety and lack of sleep, but then I just can’t stay away from it. Ihaveto make movies. So, right now, I feel like, “I don’t want to make another movie ever,” but then I’ll do another movie.
What This Means For An Until Dawn Sequel
A Sequel May Not Come For A While
Sandberg’s response to a potential sequel indicates that he is not necessarily finished with theUntil Dawnseries.The video game itself has a spin-off,Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, which shows that there is potential to expand thecinematic universe as well. The movie’s chaotic ending also opens the door for a sequel to pick up right where the story finished. However, Sandberg made it clear that he needs a break from filmmaking before he continues with moreUntil Dawn.
It’s fair to assume that he will return toUntil Dawndown the line, especially if the adaptation becomes a box-office success. Additionally, his belief that “you may do much more with Until Dawn” shows that he has considered potential routes for the story to take. His decision to end the film by showing that the cycle of death will continue for a new group of characters,different fromUntil Dawn’s cast, sets up a strong base for a sequel, or even multiple sequels.
