Despite being one of the most successful anime of recent years,Dragon Ball Superhas often been compared with the original series, with opinions divided among fans. While many consider it a worthy successor to Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga, a small portion of the fandom is still not convinced about the themes it introduced to the franchise.

Yet, two ofSuper’s most important characters, the strongest God of Destructionand his loyal Angel, Beerus and Whis, prove the sequel is far better than fans realize. These fighters are not only among the funniest and most unique in the series, but they also serve a much deeper purpose to Goku’s development as a character.

Beerus and Whis Are Super’s Best Contributions

The God of Destruction and His Angel Give Goku a New Objective

Almost 20 years after the ending ofDragon Ball’s most controversial anime,GT, a new movie was released that aimed to reinvigorate the franchise. This film, namedBattle of the Gods, continued the story of Goku and his friends some years after Majin Buu was defeated, introducing a new and imposing villain in the form of Beerus.

The God of Destruction was depicted as a stubborn, gluttonous, and short-tempered fighter who enjoyed causing chaos and testing his strength against powerful opponents. As is often the case with new antagonists, Goku did not hesitate before facing this mighty enemy, engaging inone of the best fights in the entire franchise. Still, this battle ended peculiarly.

Goku did not manage to defeat Beerus, even with his new godly transformation. Kakarot began seeing the god as a fighter he aspired to become, instead of an enemy that disappeared from memory after their arc was over. This was an amazing way for the series to develop Goku while also introducing new opponentswith powers like Goku’s.

Beerus and Whis Brought Comedy Back to the Franchise

Despite Being Serious Opponents, They Are Hilarious

Besides giving Goku a new horizon to reach in terms of power, Beerus and Whis helped bring back the humor thatDragon Ballhad forgotten about over the years. Most hardcore fans might remember that the original series was several times more whimsical thanZorGT, often consideredone of the funniest anime.

Even though they still serve the role of imposing opponents and mentors for the heroes, Beerus and Whis are also some of the most enjoyable characters in the franchise. Their constant fights over food and nonchalant attitude towards fighting have helped the series’ best arc feel more enjoyable and significantly less tense.
