The Handmaid’s Taleseason 6, episode 6 is one of the most significant episodes in developing June’s love triangle, which is interesting considering that Luke plays no role in it. The episode starts after the end ofThe Handmaid’s Taleseason 6, episode 5, with Commander Lawrence working to get June out of Gilead. He brings June to Nick, who agrees to help. However, several obstacles get in their way, including Commander Wharton. Despite this, Nick still pledges to help June, although a reveal late in the episode highlights that their romance is surely over.
There’s Likely No Coming Back From Nick’s Betrayal Of June & Mayday
June Cannot Forgive Him
While sneaking June out of Gilead,Nick discovers that Commander Wharton has paid him a visit. Some of their conversation isn’t heard, as June decides to leave Nick and go to Serena Joy for help. Nick and June are reunited at Serena Joy’s house, but they are interrupted when Commander Wharton appears. Nick and June hide in the closet, listening in on Serena and Wharton’s conversation. In this conversation,Wharton reveals that he knows about Mayday’s attack on Jezebel’s, with him revealing that he learned this information via a confession from Nick.
June is shocked and hurt at Nick’s betrayal, with the episode ending here. Mayday’s plan to use Jezebel’s to kill some of Gilead’s most powerful Commanders has been the main arc inThe Handmaid’s Taleseason 6. It is the reason that June is in Gilead at all, with her and Moira going back to Jezebel’s to warn the women there about the attack. The Jezebel’s attack was a last-ditch effort to hurt Gilead in the wake of rising Gileadean influence. It would have been a major move if Mayday had pulled it off, which is why June is so hurt by Nick’s betrayal.
The Handmaid’s Tale Snatched Away June & Nick’s Happy Ending
She Almost Went To Paris With Him
When Nick first arrives at Serena Joy’s house, he is hectic, with him proposing an odd plan to June. Nick begs June to come with him to Paris, with him wanting her to escape Gilead and live in peace with him. Despite June having a family, she seems surprisingly open to the idea. June clearly loves Nick at this point, and the Paris trip would be a way for her to escape her pain.June and Nick going to Paris would have been a potential happy ending forThe Handmaid’s Tale, although Commander Wharton’s appearance completely derails this.
Nick’s betrayal cost Mayday their chance at taking down Gilead and June a chance at saving Hannah.
Now thatJune knows about Nick’s betrayal, there is virtually no way that they will ever be together. Nick’s betrayal cost Mayday their chance at taking down Gilead and June a chance at saving Hannah. The longer Gilead runs, the more people die, meaning that some blood is on Nick’s hands. Nick only made the confession to save his own life, which is why June feels so betrayed by it.
They Were Never Going To End Up Together
AlthoughJune’s love trianglehas been a major story inThe Handmaid’s Tale, her relationship with Nick has always been doomed. June’s love for Nick was merely a way for her to have hope while she was stuck in Gilead. June spent much of the early seasons attempting to reunite with Luke, and when she did,it meant that she and Nick would probably never be in a long-term relationship. Fans ofThe Handmaid’s Taleprobably wouldn’t like the show ending with June abandoning her husband, meaning that their relationship was never in the cards.
Nick’s allegiance to Gilead also made a relationship with June a difficult sell. While Nick has done treasonous things thanks to his love for June, he is still a perpetrator of the Gileadean system. Having June choose to be with him would feel like a betrayal of her hatred of Gilead, with it being a confusing note to endThe Handmaid’s Taleon.
