Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Better Sister season 1 finale! The Better Sisterfeatured a big death twist at the end of season 1, perfectly setting up season 2’s story after changing a character’s book fate. The Prime Video thriller is based on Alafair Burke’s book of the same name, following two sisters, Chloe and Nicky, coming together after Adam, Nicky’s former husband and Chloe’s current husband, is murdered. Thecharacters inThe Better Sisterare all related to the case, whether it’s the sisters themselves, their son/step-son Ethan, and detectives looking into the case.

The Better Sistermakes book changesthat offer a different take on the original story. This includes Nicky relapsing and attending AA meetings, alongside emphasis on some storylines over others. The TV show offers a deeper look at Gentry Groupas well, the mysterious organization Adam was representing and spying on. Jake Rodriguez (Gabriel Sloyer) dead on a beach in The Better Sister episode 8

Jake’s Death Sets The Stage For The Better Sister Season 2

Jake Doesn’t Die In The Source Material

One core character in both the book and the TV series is Jake Rodriguez, an attorney at Adam’s firm who is best friends with him and Chloe. However, as the series progresses, it’s soon revealed that he and Chloe were having a secret relationship with each other, something they kept hidden from everyone else prior to her husband’s murder. He was also heavily involved in what the firm was doing with Gentry Group, privy to its dark secrets, from bribery to human trafficking. But he was also secretly feeding this information to the FBI prior to Braddock’s arrest.

However, while Jake survives to the end of the book, he’s not so lucky in the TV series;his dead body washes up on a beach near the end of the final episode. Whilereviews forThe Better Sisterhave been generally positive, this lays the groundwork for what could be a season 2 that’s just as interesting. Jake was likely killed by Gentry Group to keep him silent, especially if they found out he was feeding info to law enforcement. A follow-up could focus on the aftermath of his death, more deeply exploring the organization and its nefarious involvement.

What The Better Sister Season 2’s Story Could Be About

Gentry Group Could Become The Primary Focus Of The Show’s Future

The Better Sisteris a standalone novel, with Burke not having penned nor announced a sequel as of writing. However, that doesn’t have to prevent the TV show from continuing forward with season 2, something that could now happen because of Jake’s death. If season 2 does come to fruition, then thePrime Video original seriescould tie his demise together with Braddock’s arrest, especially since both seem to involve Gentry Group. This could offer more context to why they killed him and what it means for his boss now that he’s taken the fall for Adam’s murder.

[T]here’s no telling whether the shadowy organization will target those close to Chloe after she outed them.

But the main trio of Chloe, Nicky, and Ethan wouldn’t be out of danger.Chloe was helping the FBI herself with their investigation into Gentry Group, having given them files from Adam’s work computer earlier in the series. This makes her complicit in helping to take them down, something they might know if they were so brazen as to target Jake. It also means her family might be in danger, too, as there’s no telling whether the shadowy organization will target those close to Chloe after she outed them.

The fallout from Braddock’s arrest and Jake’s death would be the perfect way forThe Better Sisterseason 2 to happen, especially if the story was tied back in with Gentry Group. This would allow the series to continue with an original storyline building off its source material, expanding on the threats introduced in season 1 to deliver a unique plot. With another murder mystery already waiting to be solved, the show has the perfect setup to continue beyond its original work.
