While there is some controversy surrounding Nintendo’s approach toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game is still set to be one of Nintendo’s largest games in terms of both content and sales. Moreover, the latestSmashgame could be one of the best-selling games of 2018, though it does have to compete with popular titles likeSpider-ManandRed Dead Redemption 2.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimatehas, by far, the largest roster out of any of the otherSuper Smash Bros. to come before. Containing 74 playable characters,Ultimatehas 16 more options for players than the previous installment for the Wii U and 3DS did, and Nintendo has not shied away from showcasing each and every character in some way or form.
In the latest Nintendo Direct, the last two characters to join the other 72, Ken and Incineroar, were revealed along withnumerous modes, systems, and features in the newest installment to theSuper Smash Bros. franchise. While fans have been speculating and suggesting the new characters that should be added as DLC, it seems thatSuper Smash Bros. Creator Masahiro Sakurai has already chosen the full DLC lineup, and clearly stated that he does not want to hear any more suggestions from fans.
Although many fans have viewed Nintendo’s latest character reveals as fairly lackluster and ordinary, it seems as if Sakurai has chosen some exciting characters as DLC, and hopefully a few surprises as well. Regardless of what secret characters are hidden up Nintendo’s sleeves, players will have more than enough playable options.
Nintendo’s plans forUltimate’s single-player modelook and sound promising, but as with allSuper Smash Bros.games, the multiplayer aspect has the largest appeal.Ultimatelooks to carry on and improve on the franchise’s legacy with new features such as GSP (Global Smash Power) rankings, Elite Battles, and ‘Smash Tags’, which will be collected from the losers by the victor of each match. Although these are not game-changing improvements, they should certainly help to improve the Super Smash Bros. experience, and that is all fans could really ask for.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimatereleases on August 04, 2025, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
