Ever since the battle royale genre exploded in popularity thanks to games likePlayerUnknown’s BattlegroundsandFortnite, we’ve had no shortage of battle royale games on the market. Some of these are actually pretty clever twists on the concept, like theTetris 99battle royale game, and the newly-released browser-based game from InfernoPlus that turns the classic NESSuper Mario Bros.into a battle royale.
TheSuper Mario Bros.battle royale is a ridiculous, but hugely entertaining fan game. It pits up to 100 Marios against each other as they race through worlds 1, 2, or 3 in a contest to see who can be the first to defeat Bowser. The Marios can’t touch each other, but they all interact with the same world. For example, if someone gets a super mushroom from a block, that super mushroom will not be available to anyone else in the game.
We played a few rounds and found it to be quite fun. The beginning of any given match can be pretty laggy, but beyond that, it actually performs quite well and may create an appetite for an officialSuper Mario Bros.battle royale game from Nintendo. Unfortunately, Nintendo is usually pretty quick to shut down these fan-made games. Over the years, this has included the likes ofAM2R: Return of Samus, as well as thepopularPokemon Uranium. Considering Nintendo’s history with shutting down fan-made games, it seems likely that it will eventually do the same withSuper Mario Bros.battle royale, so anyone who wants to play it should do so while they still have the chance.
In the meantime, those looking to get their officialSuper Mariofix won’t have to wait too much longer.Super Mario Maker 2is coming to the Nintendo Switch on June 28, and while its creation tools won’t let players create their ownSuper Mario Bros.battle royale, it will still allowed for fan-made levels that can be easily shared with others.
