Sandfall Interactive, the small and talented studio behind the 2025 Game of the Year frontrunner,Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has now dropped a subtle hint about its future projects, and the tease should be exciting forExpedition 33fans. The game’s underdog development story and unique approach to turn-based content and narrative resonated with a large portion of RPG fans, and it’s now looking like the studio is far from finished with turn-based RPGs.

During an interview withAutomatonat CEDEC 2025, creative director Guillaume Broche and lead programmer Tom Guillermin stated that they haveno interest in expanding Sandfall Interactive to a typical AAA development size.“For now, I’d prefer working as a small team,“saidGuillermin.

While discussing that topic with the interviewer, Broche and Guillermin may have dropped a hint about the future of Sandfall Interactive projects. Guillermin stated:“when it comes to making a full-priced turn-based RPG, I believe that the team we have now is just the right size,“possibly indicating Sandfall’s next game will be another turn-based RPG.

Clair Obscur Devs’s Next Game Is Likely A Turn-Based RPG

Which Isn’t A Surprise At All

Expedition 33wasinspired by classic JRPGsof the late 90s and early 2000s, likeFinal Fantasy,The Legend of Dragoon,Lost Odyssey, and more. The game was praised for its stellar soundtrack, moving narrative, engaging turn-based combat, and its high-fidelity graphics, something commonly missing with modern turn-based RPGs,a hole that has now been filled byExpedition 33.

WithExpedition 33paying homage to the classics, while also crafting its own unique identity,it isn’t surprising that Sandfall Interactive would make another turn-based RPG, assuming this comment holds any weight. It’s currently the highest-rated game of all time on Metacritic by user scores and also thehighest-rated game of 2025by critics, so fans likely want more.

Despite Their Success, Clair Obscur Devs Remain Humble

Sandfall Interactive Is Seemingly The Envy Of The Industry Right Now

Expedition 33was praised by virtually the entire industry, and despite the game’s surprise success and mainstream appeal, the developers seem to have stayed humble and arenot eager to expand operations. Recently, members ofthe team met with Square Enixto exchange ideas and creative visions, a massive studio that served as a huge inspiration for them, so it will be interesting to see how both parties will approach future titles.

With Square Enix movingFinal Fantasyaway from being turn-based in recent years, Sandfall Interactive appears to be marching forward with the knowledge of what madeClair Obscur: Expedition 33so successful. If Sandfall’s next game is indeed another turn-based RPG, fans will likely be thrilled.
