In the movie directed by Rian Johnson, Luke Skywalker sacrifices himself, distracting his nephew and former apprentice and the First Order so the last of the Resistance can escape. However, it seems Ren didn’t fully understand what happened during his duel with his uncle.

Kylo Ren Didn’t Sense Luke Skywalker’s Death In The Last Jedi
After using her impressive Force mastery to get into Kylo Ren’s head and seemingly make him think he killed her, Grandea confirms Luke Skywalker’s death. Despite Ren’s protests that she’s lying, Grandea confirms she feltLuke’s loss after he Force projected himself from Ahch-To to Craitto face down the First Order, an act that required all of his power.
Apparently, Kylo Ren didn’t realize his uncle had died at the end ofThe Last Jedi. Unable to sense his passing through the Force, Ben must have assumed Luke was still alive after his Force projection. After all, Luke’s final words to him were, “See you around kid…”
Keeping all of that in mind, it feels safe to assume that Kylo Ren was expecting a final reckoning with his uncle beyond their duel on Crait.
Kylo Ren Planned On Hunting His Old Master Down
Before Grandea’s reveal, it seems like a good bet that Kylo Ren had every intention of hunting down his master and killing him, believing that Luke was still hiding out somewhere in the galaxy. Likewise, we know from2022’sStar Wars #25that Kylo Ren did spend time between episodes searching for Luke.
Perhaps a reckoning with Luke’s force ghost is in Kylo Ren’s future before the events ofRise of Skywalker. Itwouldbe a nice nod to the original scripts for Episode IX, which would have seenLuke’s Force ghost effectively haunting his nephew.
