After several teases of Peter Quill’s new costume, Marvel fans can now seeStar-Lord’s new design in all its glory. For years, Marvel fans have been waiting for the grand return of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s leader, and now they’re getting exactly what they asked for as Peter Quill steps back into the spotlight.

The design brings back Star-Lord’s often-forgotten Element Guns - powerful weapons that can unleash fire, ice and more.

In newly released cover art for the upcomingImperial #1- from Jonathan Hickman, Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello - fans get to see Star-Lord in his full costume. While teaser art has shown Star-Lord with vambraces, a jacket and a black cowl, variant covers from Todd Nauck and Alessandro Cappuccio show Peter Quill in his ful armor and helmet, and wieldinghis often-forgotten Element Guns.

The new look combines Star-Lord’s classic and modern designs, withhis new helmet calling back to his very first look, way back in 1976’sMarvel Preview #4,complete with an owl-like visor. His vambraces and greaves are an eye-catching shiny gold, similar to hisImperialally Nova, and Quill also sports new facial hair with a retro vibe. Indeed, while talking toComicbook.com, artist Federico Vicentini said:

star-lord original costume

When creating the costumes, I wanted to go back a bit to the past, such as bringing back Star-Lord’s helmet, giving Nova an aviator-style jacket, and taking inspiration from classic heroes like Flash Gordon. J’Son’s suit also went back to a more classic style. Peter will also have a more “real” suit to match his father’s.

Star-Lord Has an Ambitious New Purpose in Marvel Lore

Peter Quill Is Partnering with Nova for a Galaxy-Spanning Investigation

Marvel’s newImperialseriesis intended to revamp its cosmic characters, asa mass assassination of galactic leaders throws space into chaos. In the power vacuum that results, characters like Hulk, Professor Xavier and Black Panther head to space, claiming new leadership roles among the stars. The story will follow Nova and Star-Lord as they investigate the assassination, encountering space’s new powers along the way.

Despite his popularity, Star-Lord hasn’t been central to the Marvel Universe in a long time, so it’s fantastic news for fans that he’ll be at the heart of this new event. It’s also noteworthy that Peter’s costume resembles his early design (below), since those stories are now of questionable canon. Originally, Star-Lord was a dedicated astronaut and war hero, chasing the truth of his origins in space, however the comics turned him into more of a slacker in line with Chris Pratt’s depiction of the character in the MCU, retconning his backstory to fit.For longtime fans, it’s good news that Marvel is revisiting the hero Star-Lord used to be, especially as he’s sucked into another galaxy-spanning conflict similar tohis epic exploits in theAnnihilationevent.

For fans of Marvel’s cosmic heroes, 2025 couldn’t be any bigger, asImperialrevamps core heroes like Nova and Star-Lord while taking other Marvel icons to space. Here’s hoping the story ofImperiallives up to the incredible artwork Marvel just shared, givingStar-Lordthe cosmic canvas he deserves.
