Sega has confirmed thatSonic Superstarswill cost $59.99 at launch. The game was revealed at the Summer Game Fest 2023 showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley, where a number of games were revealed or got a new look at their gameplay. This included the likes ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, theofficial gameplay reveal ofLike a Dragon Gaiden, and more. Fans were very surprised to see a newSonicgame being announced at the show.Sonic Superstarsis touted as being a new experience that combines the classic 2D gameplay of the Genesis titles with a new 3D aesthetic. It brings to mind the look and gameplay of the 2D segments of Classic Sonic in games likeSonic GenerationsorSonic Forces. This game won’t be limited to just Sonic however, as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were confirmed to be playable with their own abilities in the game’s announcement trailer. Some might have believed that initial trailer was for a free-to-play game or, because of past titles, would be priced lower like at $40 whenSonic Forceswas first released in 2017. The game is set to release digitally and physically in Fall 2023, with more details regarding future packages and bonuses being given at a later date.
More details about the game were also revealed in Sega’s statement, such as the new powers in the trailer are from the series' Chaos Emeralds. These will give Sonic and his friends the abilities to create clones, ride waterfalls, and more. Sonic and his friends will face Dr. Eggman,classicSonic the Hedgehogvillain Fang the Sniper, and a brand-new character created by Sonic’s original character designer, Naoto Ohshima.
Sonic Superstarslaunches in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
