Solo Leveling’s Beru might not be as royal as he thinks he is. The creator of the hit franchise, Chugong, recently gave an interview where he pointed out some key aspects of the character that show that The Ant King might hold himself in higher esteem than he should. It’s a pretty hilarious turn considering just how powerful and menacing the character is.
The Ant King is another great addition toSolo Leveling. The once-in-a-generation series has been breaking record after record (with the second season somehow breaking the first season’s records), thanks in no small part to the viciousness of the villains within it. Chugong’s interview doesn’t speak much about the main villain of the Jeju Island Arc, but what he says changes the character’s trajectory. It’s an interesting tidbitthat reframes Beru’s identity in a much more fascinating light.

The Ant King Is The Scariest Villain In Solo Leveling
The Ant King Slaughter Of Japan And Korea’s S-Rank Hunters Is Spine-Chilling
Out of every villain inSolo Leveling, none are as terrifying as The Ant King. He’s notthe strongest villain in Solo Leveling, but the fact that the S-Rank Hunters of both Korea and Japan tried to stand up to him only to get demolished makes him even scarier. During the Jeju Island Arc (arguably the greatest arc in the series), The Ant King was born.
The Ant Queen wanted to make an ant strong enough to stand up to the Hunters who had been killing her other children, and she succeeded. The Ant King was the strongest monster in the world since Kamish, the boss of the first ever S-Rank Dungeon and the monster known as “Humanity’s Greatest Calamity”.
The Ant King made the strongest S-Rank Hunter in Japan, Goto Ryuji, look like a fool during their battle. If it wasn’t for Jinwoo’s arrival to the battlefield, he would have slaughtered all ofKorea’s S-Rank Huntersas well.
Jinwoo’s fight against The Ant King isthe best fight inSolo Leveling.Their back-and-forth brawl shows not only how strong The Ant King is, but how unbelievably powerful Sung Jinwoo has become as well.
Beru Might’ve Been Hyping Himself Up A Bit Too Much
Beru Referred To Himself As The Ant King; Chugong Thought Otherwise
The Ant King might not be as kingly as he thinks. In a recent interview, Chugong said that “Beru is more of an Ant Warrior than an Ant King. He was originally an existence born to become the strongest soldier to protect the queen, and he has no obligation to propagate his own offspring or create an ant kingdom. He is far from being a king. Nevertheless, the reason I specifically gave him the title ‘Ant King’ is… well because, ‘Ant King’ sounds cool, doesn’t it?”
Chugong isn’t wrong: The Ant King is a much cooler name than ‘the strongest Ant soldier’. It’s funny that Beru carries himself so highly when the creator of the franchise doesn’t see the villain in the same light. The Ant King was never intended to be a king or a monarch; instead,he was supposed to be the strongest Ant that would protect the other ants from the Hunters coming to Jeju Island.
Interviews like these are always illuminating. It’s interesting to see directly into the creator of the series' mind and get a feel for the story as he intended. Unfortunately for Beru, he was never the king that he thought he was, but now that he serves Sung Jinwoo as one ofthe strongest Shadows inSolo Leveling,he probably doesn’t care at all.
