Kyogre and Groudon have both come and gone and now it is finally time for Rayquaza to return toPokemon GOLegendary Battle Raids. Rayquaza is a very PvE relevant creature inthePoGOmetagame, so the Tier 5 battles are going to be incredibly popular while this option is available for a few days. It can be a tough fight for players who aren’t prepared, so trainers should take a minute to ensure they have the best counters powered up and ready.
Rayquaza initially appeared inPokemon GOraids about two years ago, during a winter rotation. That means that there are a lot of new Pokemon, evolutions, and movesets available now and the strategy for the Raid has changed quite a bit. For players who still have an older roster saved, we thought it would be a good idea to post an update with the current best counters available. Especially since this one includes some surprising best matchups.

Before the July 31 through September 2 Raid rotation, players will want to revisit their Dragon- counters and spend some Candy and Stardust to get the best team prepared. Ice-types are going to be strongest here, so hopefully you spent some time this year powering up at least a few Mamoswines and Glaceons.
The biggest changes since Rayquaza’s early Raid days will bethe inclusion of Mamoswine, Glaceon, and Weavile. Those are all some strong newer options for players who want to take their roster a notch from the old strategy of high IV Mewtwo and Jynx armies. Be sure to keep in mind that this raid rotation does have a chance for a shiny, so there’s some extra motivation to get out and battle during the couple of days that Ray is available.
Be sure to check back in the coming days for even morePokemon GOnews, updates, and strategy guides. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
