The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildis now available on the Switch 2, and you can greatly enhance the (already enhanced) experience with just two amiibo. With the advent ofBOTW’s Switch 2 upgrade, there’s a fair bit of new content to tie in with the game’s companion app, not to mention the option for higher-resolution graphics and better performance across the board.BOTWlooks, plays, and feels better than ever on the Switch 2, and there’snever been a better time to revisit Hyrule.
If you want to take the experience to the next level, though, two relatively cheap amiibo can go a long way. This series of plastic figurines produced by Nintendo are the sole survivor of the toys-to-life era: tap them on your Switch 2’s right thumbstick, and they’ll spawn all manner of in-game items, characters, et cetera. Their functionality varies by game, but they’re almost always handy to have. And these two can add a lot to yourBreath of the Wildexperience, especially when you’re playing on Switch 2.
These 2 Amiibo Add The Best Functionality For BOTW
Why You Want Wolf Link & Epona
The Wolf Link and Epona amiibo both have helpful and interesting functionalitiesthat’ll greatly enhance yourBreath of the Wildexperience, on Switch 2 or otherwise. They’re also compatible with the original Switch version, and can be purchased relatively cheaply from various sources online.
In order to use any amiibo inBOTW, you’ll need to activate your amiibo rune first via the Sheikah Slate.
Let’s look at Wolf Link first. Tap it on your right thumbstick, andWolf Link,as he appears inTwilight Princess, will spawn right next to youin-game. He’ll function as your very own traveling companion, following you throughout the map and fighting alongside you. He’ll also lead you towards whatever your Sheikah Sensor is tracking, if it’s nearby. Wolf Link remains by your side until his HP runs out, at which point you’ll have to wait until the next in-game day to scan him back in. you may also buff Wolf Link’s attack power by feeding him gourmet meat.
In addition, either of two classic Link amiibo - either the one made forSuper Smash Bros.or theLegend of Zelda30th anniversaryTwilight PrincessLink -will spawn Epona, Link’s steadfast horse companion, inBOTW. She’s basically just a free horse with the best possible stats: four stars each in Strength, Speed, and Stamina, with a gentle temperament and a full bond from the moment you meet her. Other than that, she works like any other horse in the game, except for the fact that you may’t groom her mane.
Having these two around makesBOTWfeel a bit more like classicZelda.
It’s worth nothing thatboth of these amiibo are also excellent for classicZeldafans. The nostalgia factor is strong: Wolf Link is, of course, an iconic part ofTwilight Princess, and Epona has appeared in almost everyZeldagame except this one, where her presence is missed. Having these two around makesBOTWfeel a bit more like classicZelda.
Other Zelda Amiibo Can Help Boost Your Inventory
But Wolf Link & Epona Do A Lot More
Lots of amiibo are compatible withBOTW, butfew of them are quite as rewarding as these two. Scan another one - say, for example, theSmash Bros.Zelda, and you’ll just get a weapon - the Twilight Bow - which will eventually break. You’ll also get an assortment of random items that you could easily find elsewhere in-game, potentially including other weapons, gems, and ingredients.
Other amiibo will give you cosmetic items: scanning a Toon Link amiibo, for example, is the only way to gain Link’s iconic green tunic and pointed cap. That’s all well and good, but wholly unnecessary. It doesn’t add to the gameplay in the same way that Wolf Link and Epona do.
Amiibo Can Be Expensive, But Wolf Link & Smash Bros. Link Aren’t Inflated
Some Amiibo Cost More Than Others
Some amiibo sell for prohibitively expensive prices, and I’m not even talking about the super-rare, Japan-exclusive ones you can only get on eBay, like the yarn Yoshi fromYoshi’s Wooly Worldthat regularly goes for hundreds of dollars. Even run-of-the-mill amiibo, like the set ofStreet Fightercards, can run you up to $40, which is a big ask, especially alongside Nintendo’s recently increased game prices.
Butyou can get these twoBOTWamiibo for relatively low prices, and they’re not that hard to find, either. Wolf Link costs $16, directly from the Nintendo website, andSmashLink can easily be found via GameStop or Amazon for about $25 - you may be able to find them both at lower prices if you’re willing to buy them used, too.
So, if you want to liven up yourZeldaexperience on Switch 2, and the base improvements toBOTWdon’t quite do it for you, consider investing in these two amiibo. They’ll bring a lot to your experience withThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildwithout costing too much, so they’re certainly worth the price.
