It looks like the Phantom Thieves aren’t quite ready to retire just yet, as Atlus announcesPersona 5 R.Many assume this is a new version of the popular RPG, but with very little to go on, it is purely speculation at this time.
It was discovered that adomain namefor the title was registered a short while ago, and has since gone live. Now, a teaser trailer has also been released, but neither do much to shed light on the game. They both do, however, point to more information being released in March 2019. It’s also worth noting that the trailer begins with the PlayStation logo, which all but confirms the game will release for the console.
As for what can be gleaned from the video itself, there isn’t much. It simply contains some of the same scenes of Tokyo found inPersona 5, with screens showing the Phantom Thieves logo and the phrase “New Projects”, which could indicate multiple things to unveil this March.
This wouldn’t be the first time the company released followup versions of itsPersonatitles. BothPersona 3 FESandPersona 4 Goldenare good examples. They took the original games, but added new content and enhancements. Following that pattern,Persona 5 Rcould be doing something similar.
One of those titles was even ported to the PlayStation Vita, which suggestsPersona 5might not remain a console exclusive for long. And now that protagonistJoker is confirmed as a playable fighterinSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, it is fueling speculation thatPersona 5 Rmight be heading to the Switch.
The inclusion of Joker shows that Atlus and Nintendo have been cultivating a good working relationship, so this scenario seems likely. In fact, Atlus is already working on another project for a Nintendo system.Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinthreleased back in 2014, and it’srecently announced sequel,Persona Q2, will be available on the 3DS.
For now,Personafans will just have to sit tight until more information is announced. Thankfully, they won’t be waiting long. In three short months, Atlus seemingly has a lot to reveal to audiences, and, like the Phantom Thieves, it will likely steal our hearts.
Persona 5is available now for PS4 and PS3.
