With Paul Giamatti set to cause trouble for the next generation inStar Trek: Starfleet Academy, the franchise newcomer teases the challenging nature of his character. The upcoming Paramount+ series takes place in the titular academy, as a class of hopeful cadets must learn lessons to become the best officers they can be in a drastically changed galaxy. Alongside Giamatti and the young newcomers,Star Trek: Starfleet Academycastalso features the return of franchise veterans Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr, and Mary Wiseman.
Ahead of audiences arriving atStar Trek: Starfleet Academyfor their first semester, Giamatti opened up toThe Playlistabout his experience joining the franchise as a still largely mysterious antagonist. While the actor stated how much of a pleasure it was to join the universe, Giamatti was more cryptic about his actual role, only stating thathis character is"problematic,“could be considered an antagonist, and has a presence in several episodes across the season. Check out Giamatti’s full response below:

It was great. I had a ball doing that. And I mean, again, during the Star Trekworld, it’s lovely people, and it was nothing but pleasure, and it was a dream wish fulfillment for me to be able to be in Star Trek. I play a very interesting, complicated guy, bad guy, I suppose. I’m a bad guy. Yeah, I guess I’m a bad guy. But yeah, so I dunno what more I can say about that without giving too much away.
I’m in more than one episode. I have a little arc through this season. I reappear and become more problematic as the show goes on.

What This Means For Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Starfleet’s Latest Threats May Come From Within
While vague,Giamatti’s response does offer several hints towards hisStar Trek: Starfleet Academycharacterthrough his careful wording. Rather than fully classifying his character as a villain, Giamatti stated that his character could be considered an antagonist. Classifying him as problematic rather than an outright villain could suggest his actions may be less outwardly evil, but rather something that is more subjective and open to discussion. When paired with the show’s premise, this could suggest several things.
WithStarfleet Academyfocused on a younger generation,Giamatti’s charactercould easily be a mentor or parental figure who is trying to impose their own beliefs and lifestyles onto the young cadets, bringing them into conflict with what they could usher in. Alternatively, official descriptions have teased the overarching threat to the series being something that could shake up the Academy and Federation itself. Rather than an external threat,Giamatti could be playing an individual who seeks to overhaul Starfleet’s mandatein the wake of the previously mentioned cataclysm, leading to the idealist cadets having to preserve Starfleet’s core values.
