Yesterday we reported thatOverwatchgame director Jeff Kaplan took to the game’s forums in order toshut down a troll. Now a post on theOverwatchsubreddit from the troll themself provides an update to the whole situation which seems to have worked out for everyone.
Reddit user SharkyMarkySDmade a postto theOverwatchfan-base today, explaining their actions and detailing a new interaction with Jeff Kaplan himself that went a lot better than their last encounter. According to the long-time fan, they contacted Blizzard customer support and asked them to pass along an apology to the director which led to a far more pleasant interaction than their previous confrontation.
About an hour later, Jeff replied to the user directly, apologizing for calling them out in such a public manner and thanking them for their feedback on the game’s sniper hero, Widowmaker. By way of explanation for his actions, the director commented:
“We get tons of feedback each day that we both agree and disagree with, and we love hearing it. But it’s super demoralizing to us to simply get insulted. To imply that we don’t play our game or that we don’t love our game is just straight up false.”
After giving a SharkyMarky a sincere apology, Jeff offered the user a year’s subscription toWorld of Warcraftand told them to let him know if any players were being harassing, since the user’s online handle was posted on reddit yesterday. What’s more, the director gave the fan access to the exclusive Widowmaker ‘Noire’ skin which is only available to members whopre-orderedOverwatchbefore its release last year.
It’s a heartwarming interaction and it truly encapsulates everything we love about theOverwatchdevelopment team. Directly responding to fans and being willing to apologize for mistakes on their part are just two reasons why the game’s players hold the team, and Jeff himself, in such high regard.
