Resident Evil Requiemwas one of the big draws forGamescom Opening Night Live, and the game’s new trailer is already showing the fate of a couple of characters. The ninth mainline installment of the iconic survival horror franchise is set to release in February 2026, but developer and publisher Capcom isn’t afraid to reveal some ofRequiem’s early story beats.

In the newResident Evil Requiemtrailer, the second to last shown at Gamescom ONL, two characters are already shown being killed off, including the mother of new protagonist Grace Ashcroft. The trailer appears to be part in-game cinematic, part gameplay, with a couple of first-person sections apparently pulled fromRE9’s earliest sections. This new trailer helps fill in some of the background info to theResident Evil Requiemreveal trailer from June.

Resident Evil Requiem Shows Off A Couple Of Early Deaths

Tough Enviornment For Hotel Managers

The new trailer is a bit more straightforward thanResident Evil Requiem’s reveal trailer. It shows Grace Ashcroft working on her laptop in a hotel room when her mother returns. A mysterious phone call seems to worry the elder Ashcroft before the lights go out. Grace’s mother seems to know what’s going on, but refrains from giving any information to her daughter.

The two navigate the hotel’s dark hallways until they meet a man who seems to be the hotel manager, and who promises to get the lights back on – just before a plastic bag is pulled over his head and a knife slits his throat. Shortly after, Grace and her mother gather themselves and attempt to continue their flight from the hotel. The new trailer’s final clip, just before theResident Evil Requiemtitle card, shows Grace turning toward her mother and screaming, implying she’s just witnessed her mother’s death.

Resident Evil Requiem - Grace

It’s fairly obvious, given the context of the first trailer, that this new trailer is showing footage from very early in the game. Grace is younger here, and this new footage appears to be the incident that was alluded to in the reveal trailer, which is the reason for Grace’s wariness about returning to the hotel years later as an FBI investigator. It’s likely that this gameplay footage comes from the very beginning ofRequiem.

Grace Ashcroft Is In For One Frightening Adventure

A Terrifying New Resident Evil

Nothing less is expected ofResident Evil, butRequiemis ramping up the horror, with the hotel feeling like it could provide the same sort of claustrophobic tension as the Baker estate inResident Evil 7. The reveal trailer already established that Grace has a traumatic past, but it’s quite surprising to see this new trailer already show exactly what happened. HowRE’s new virus and Grace’s investigation years later connects to this flashback remains a mystery.

Requiemis set 30 years after the originaland the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City, but Capcom is so far keeping a tight lid on how Grace’s story connects to the rest of the series. Rumors have claimed it will act as something of a conclusion to the series' myriad storylines up to this point, but all we’ve seen so far are the mysterious deaths of a hotel manager and Grace’s mother. We now have plenty of backstory forResident Evil Requiem, but it’s main narrative still remains largely mysterious.
