Watsonstar Morris Chestnut has addressed the possibility of Sherlock Holmes appearing in the CBS medical drama. The modernSherlock Holmes-inspired adaptationis unusual in the sense that the Great Detective does not actually appear in the show. In fact, the storyline picks up after Holmes' apparent death, and sees Dr. John Watson move to Pittsburgh and open a practice to treat patients with strange or unidentifiable issues. Holmes has yet to make an appearance in the show in person, but this could be set to change.

PerDeadline, Chestnut discussed the possibility of Matt Berry - who voices Sherlock in the show - appearing on the screen in Watson at some point. Without confirming things one way or another,Chestnut suggests that Holmes does come back at some point in the series, but refuses to elaborate further. Check out Chestnut’s comments below:

Morris Chestnut talking to someone as Watson

“I will say Holmes, you know, in the mythology, does come back… and we are part of the mythology.”

What This Means For The Future Of Watson

It Seems Only A Matter Of Time Before Holmes Appears

Watsonis a show that has cleverly managed to reinvent the Sherlock Holmes narrative, and has been a success despite not having the character of Sherlock Holmes in it. Having Holmes as an intangible presence looming in the background of the show has actually worked surprisingly well, and the details of his alleged death and possible whereabouts are an overarching plot thread that will be running throughout the show. However, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before the famous detective makes an in-person appearance in the show.

Chestnut’s comments suggest that he will return, and cite the mythology of the character as being a big part of this.Watsonseason 2has had a renewal, so that will offer the series an opportunity to do this, assuming that this is actually in the cards for them. It could be that the show will keep back the Holmes reveal until the end of the season to generate interest in a renewal, or it might be that Holmes plays a central role in the story of the season.

Our Take On Holmes Appearing In Watson Season 2

It’s Important For The Show To Keep Holmes As A Secondary Character

The temptation will be high to introduce Holmes and then pivot to having him as the natural lead, with Watson falling into a supporting role. But it is important that the show avoids this, and keeps Holmes as a supportingcharacter inWatsonwho will stay on the periphery. I suspect he could make fleeting appearances, showing up to help Watson with a case, reconnecting with him, and then disappearing again without warning.Watsonis a show that needs to keep to its formula, and Holmes should only be a supporting part of this.
