Matthew Gray Gubler Comments On Spencer Reid’s Criminal Minds' Return After 5 Years

PerTV Insider, Messer discussed how great it was to have Gubler back on the show, albeit in a cameo role, and the possibility of more appearances from legacy actors from the OGCriminal Mindsrun. She admits that while they would love to welcome guest stars like Gubler back, they couldn’t commit to it.

She mentioned how scheduling might prove to be a problem, and stated that it would prove tricky for guest actors to commit to a role six months away. She concluded by stating that there aren’t concrete plans in place to have any more original stars appear, but refused to completely rule it out. Check out Messer’s comments below:

Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez), David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), and Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (AJ Cook) in Criminal MInds: Evolution.

You brought back Matthew Gray Gubler this season, which, great to see him. What are the chances of seeing him again next season or seeing Shemar Moore or Daniel Henney or any other past cast members?

“Oh, I know. We were so lucky to get him, that the stars aligned for him to be there and for such an important episode and such an emotional time. And I feel like that’s what friends do for one another and both onscreen and off, right?

It’s like, can you be here for this? And it just worked out that he could, which was a dream.

And so Season 19, we got going in the writers’ room in February of this year, and we’re now shooting. So when we’re figuring out our season, we don’t know. We can’t really count on those guest stars because they can’t tell us if they’d be available or not, six months from then or whatever.

So we don’t have any plans right now, but you never know.”

What This Means For Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4

There’s An Outside Chance Of More Cameos, But The Show Seems Rightly Content With Its Cast

While it would be great to see some of the original stars back on the show in the same vein as Gubler, it feels unlikely that this will happen from Messer comments. She talks about scheduling conflicts potentially arising, which would certainly apply to Shemar Moore, who is currently filmingS.W.A.T.spinoff showS.W.A.T. Exiles.

It seems thatCriminal Minds: Evolutionis pretty content with its current cast list, and this is understandable after a largely strong season. More cameos or guest-starring roles feel unlikely forCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 4, but a return for Gubler as Spencer has an outside chance of happening, if he has room in his schedule.

Our Take On The Chances Of More Cameos

If The Stars Align There’s A Chance, But The Show Doesn’t Need It

Gubler making another cameo as Spencer could well happen in the future, with the groundwork already laid, but the chance of other OG characters will depend on two main factors. First, the actor would need to be available for the show’s shooting schedule, and secondly, there would need to be room in the story to fit them in organically.

Criminal Minds: Evolutionhas a strong core cast, and while cameos are nice to hark back to the show’s early years, it can stand on its own two feet without a reliance on OG stars.
