In a recent interview, Matt Smith spoke about a popularHouse of the Dragonfan theory. Fans of theGame of Thronesfranchise are currently awaiting the release of the new series,A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as well asHouse of the Dragon season 3, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2026. After season 2’s ending and the numerous book changes made in adapting Martin’sFire & Bloodbook, outlandish theories forHouse of the Dragonare more prevalent than ever, including one that suggests Daemon Targaryen becomes the Three-Eyed Raven.

Speaking withEW, Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen on the epic fantasy prequel show, shared his response to the Three-Eyed Raven theory, joking, “I hope so.Good one.I like that.“The theory connects to his scene in the season 2 ending, which saw him experiencing visions of the future at the weirwood tree at Harrenhal, including a look at the future Three-Eyed Raven. Matt Smith’s answer doesn’t confirm anything, of course, aside from his enjoyment of the potential bizarre ending for his character.

What Matt Smith’s Comment About The Daemon Theory Means

Daemon Likely Isn’t The Three-Eyed Raven

Thetheory about Daemon Targaryen being the Three-Eyed Ravenis loads of fun to read and think about, but it doesn’t seem like a genuine possibility. It’s almost certainly not something George R.R. Martin planned for, and thoughHouse of the Dragoncould take his story in a different direction for the TV universe, it’s still an outcome that would raise numerous questions and, more importantly, have almost nothing to do with Daemon’s role in the Dance of the Dragons or his character arc.

Matt Smith’s Daemon has been a fan favorite on the TV series despite being a man of questionable ethics, primarily due to the actor’s performance. Smith hasn’t shown to be an avid historian ofASOIAFlore in previous interviews, buthis answer here indicates that he hasn’t heard of this theory before, likely meaning it hasn’t played a role in his work for season 3. Again, it’s a fun theory, but it just doesn’t seem plausible and would feel incredibly contrived.

Our Take On Daemon Being The Three-Eyed Raven

This Would Be An Awful Ending For Matt Smith’s Character

House of the Dragonseason 1 constructed Daemon and his brother King Viserys with a fascinating dichotomy, and season 2 used its Harrenhal vision scenes to show Daemon reckoning with his brother’s death. While this narrative had some fantastical elements, there’s still a core, human emotion that made it compelling, and these scenes would have offered a natural progression for his season 2 arc, allowing him to return to and embrace Rhaenyra. Instead, he found the answers he was looking for in the weirwood tree.

I’m all forHouse of the Dragonembracing the mystical, magical side ofASOIAFthatGame of Thronesleft out, but I don’t want it to interfere like a Deus Ex Machina in the characters' arcs.Daemon was on a path to natural growth, and I wouldn’t want to see that overriden by an additional supernatural element that pivots his arc entirely, gearing him toward becoming the Three-Eyed Raven, a character who has nothing to do withHouse of the Dragon.
