TheMetal Gearseries of games are considered some of the best stealth-action titles the genre has to offer. They are iconic games, that managed to cultivate a following of die-hard fans even when they can be slightly silly at times. If anything, thesilly moments of theMetal Geargames, such as making a box the ultimate stealth tool, have helped the series cultivate its 35-year lifespan. Jun 17, 2025 marks 35 years since the firstMetal Geargame was unveiled, and Konami is looking to celebrate this anniversary.

It seems that the biggest thing Konami is looking to do to celebrateMetal Gearturning 35 is to resume the sales of “titles that have been temporarily suspended.” While Konami wasn’t exactly specific with what titles would be returning, fans have assumed that this recent tweet meansMetal Gear Solid 2andMetal Gear Solid 3: SnakeEaterwill once again be available to play. This would likely mean that the licensing issues that causedMetal Gear Solid 2and3to be pulled from storefrontshave ended.

It was assumed that this issue would be a temporary one, but that didn’t stop fans from being worried that they would no longer be able to play some of their favoriteMetal Gear Solidtitles. Initially, all versions of both games were removed from digital storefronts back in November 2021, meaning that an eight-month wait is likely over for players.Metal Gear Solid 2and3are fondly remembered by fans of the franchise, with both games being seen as some of the best the series has to offer.

While many will be happy to see sales of these games are resuming, it isn’t currently known when they will be purchasable from online storefronts again. At one time, there were rumors of aMetal Gear Solid 3remake, which many fans would likely welcome considering the last version of the game was released in 2011. With news on that going quiet, and Konami only confirming older versions of the game will be purchasable, it seems there may be a long wait still before fans see a remake of that game.

Many, though, are glad thatMetal Gear Solid 2and3won’t likely be disappearing from digital storefronts forever. While the fear of this may seem a stretch, givenUbisoft’s recent removal of online servicesfor many of its games, a lot of gamers are currently worried about the future of video game preservation.
