The good news is that a long awaited follow up to 2012’sDreddis in development. The bad news is thatRebellionCEO Jason Kingsley confirmed theMega-City OneTV series production has had to be put on hold due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Talking to the YouTube channelV2A Emergency Broadcast System, a channel dedicated to post-apocalyptic media such asMad Maxand, indeed,Dredd, Kingsley confirmed the rights toDreddhad been returned to Rebellion and scripts have been written. Expressing his desire for a sequel to the 2012Dreddfilm starring Karl Urban, he stated that “Basically we can’t go into production because of the [pandemic] and we’ve got scripts and everything is ready to go but the problem is, because of the pandemic…everybody’s funding changes and everybody’s shifting around.”

Originally announced in 2017,Mega City Onedoesn’t have any network or streaming platform distribution deal yet although discussions are continuing. No plot details are forthcoming or even if it’ll be set in the same universe as the 2012Dreddmovie but Kingsley is keen to get Karl Urban back in the role.
The 2012Dreddfilm was the second adaptation of the iconic British characterJudge Dreddto make it to the screen, coming after the 1995 adaptation starring Sylvester Stallone as the titular Judge. The original strips of Judge Dredd introduced the world to the dystopian Mega City-1, formally the east coast of North America, crime is rife and Street Judges hand out instant sentences and often act as judge, jury, and executioner. Created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra,Judge Dreddoriginally appeared in the long running sci-fi anthology2000 ADin 1977.
Rebellion has owned the rights to the2000 ADstable of characters since, appropriately enough, 2000 and has published 2 games based on fan favorite stripsJudge Dredd: Dredd vs Deathin 2003 andRogue Trooperin 2006. In 2018, Rebellion bought a $100 million 220,000 square foot facility to convert into a film studio withMega City-Oneset to be its first major production withMoonandWarcraftdirectorDuncan Jones’Rogue Trooperadaptation, also set to be shot there.
