Scrubscreator Bill Lawrence has given a positive update on the planned revival show, following the divisive ninth and final season.Scrubswas considered one of the most inventive and off-beat sitcoms of the 2000s, and, after seemingly concluding withScrubsseason 8, the show was renewed forScrubsseason 9, which focused on a largely new cast, with star Zach Braff appearing as JD in six episodes. But the revival show should seek to reclaim its identity, by focusing on the core cast once again.

PerTV Line, Lawrence comes out in defense ofScrubsseason 9, which was widely panned by critics and audiences, insisting that he was lucky to have made it, and that those involved have gone on to have successful careers. He also opined that had the season been a spinoff, it would not have been judged as harshly, but that he understood why it wasn’t. He concludes by stating thattheScrubsreboot will be calledScrubs, and will start with Turk and JD. Read his full quote below:

Donald Faison’s Turk and Zach Braff’s JD looking very shocked and excited in Scrubs

“I hate the narrative, like, ‘Oh, the ninth year sucked.’ No, it didn’t. It’s sour grapes, whatever, I’m so lucky to have done it. I didn’t get to work on [that season] as much, but that writing staff did a great job, and I think Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, Eliza Coupe and Dave Franco have all gone on to have great careers because they were really good.

If it had been a spinoff calledScrubs: MedorScrubs: Med School, it would not have been judged as harshly, but I understand the business of that [decision]. This one is [also] calledScrubs, and it starts with JD and Turk.”

What This Means For The Scrubs Reboot

The Show Will Go Back To Basics… But Include Modern Themes

While it is unclear yet whether theScrubsreboot will be classed as season 10, or if it will seek to restart a new journey from scratch. But what is clear is that the spiritual 10th season will seek to go back to basics, and this means putting JD and Turk front and center. Their relationship was always at the heart of what madeScrubswork so well, and Lawrence’s comments suggest he also believes this.Starting with JD and Turk is a great way to bring the franchise back to its roots, and establish the two best friends as integral to this world.

TheScrubsrevivalwill see both men in adulthood, facing different challenges, with Braff already confirming this iteration of JD is set to be more cynical and beaten down by the system than in the show’s initial run. It will be interesting to see the show pick up with both characters at new points in their lives, likely married and fathers, while still trying to fight the good fight when it comes to the world of medicine. It’s likely the show will seek to explore the intricacies of the US healthcare system, and how red tape and bureaucracy can often be barriers to treatment.

Our Take On Scrubs' Focus Back On JD & Turk

This Is What The Show Will Need For A Chance Of Success

For the revival to be a success, it will need to capture the essence of what made the original show so great. JD and Turk had a wonderful dynamic and complemented one another really well, which also informed their interactions with the rest of the characters. There are plenty of othercharacters who could return for theScrubsreboot, alongside JD and Turk, but as long as those two are front and center, there is a good chance thatScrubswill be a success this time around as well.
