Although an officialWandaVisionseason 2 would have been great, I am convinced thatAgatha All Alongwas even better than the former could have been. By the time ofAgatha All Along’s ending, the perception of the show had changed greatly from when it had begun. Initially, many viewedAgatha All Alongas unnecessary, stating that no one really asked for a spin-off toWandaVision. Now, though, the witch-centric supernatural story is counted among thebetter-ranked of Marvel’s TV shows.

This has led many to clamor forAgatha All Alongseason 2, despite no confirmation from Marvel Studios that this will ever happen. Members ofAgatha All Along’s castwill surely appear again in the MCU, just as many of them first appeared inWandaVision. In many ways,Agatha All Alongserved as a continuation ofWandaVision, lessening the desire to see season 2 of the latter. Even more interestingly, I am certain thatAgatha All Alongwas a betterWandaVisionseason 2 than any officialWandaVisionseason 2 story would have been.

WandaVision Was Perfect, But Works Best As A Single-Season Show

WandaVision Did Not Suit A Multi-Season Story

Firstly, concerningWandaVisionitself, that show was excellent and remains one of the MCU’s best, but there is no denying it works better as a one-off season. The primary reason for this is the entire premise of its story.WandaVisionwas very much a mystery box show, with the viewers in the dark about what was really going onfor much of the first seven episodes. While there were certainly hints as to Wanda’s creation of the Hex, the mysteries around why this happened and whether anyone else - like Mephisto - was secretly responsible were not truly revealed until episode 8.

Given that so much of the show’s success relied on this intrigue and mystery over what actually happened, it would have been overly difficult to replicate this in a second season. I am not sayingWandaVisionseason 2would be impossible, but I think capturing that same mystery box feeling a second time would be incredibly tricky.WandaVision’s contained story worked because of that organic building of compelling questions and answers, bolstered by the fact that audiences had no idea what was going on; approaching a second season, recapturing this would not be an easy task to accomplish.

Agatha All Along Works To Continue WandaVision’s Story Without Giving The Original MCU Show A Second Season

Agatha Took WandaVision’s Baton & Ran With It

InAgatha All Along, however,WandaVisionreceived what was essentially a spiritual sequel. In so many different ways,Agatha All Alongcontinued the lingering story threads ofWandaVisionperfectly. The titular character was the main antagonist ofWandaVision, with the entire story of the show focusing on her regaining the powers that Wanda Maximoff stole from her. This, tied with the massive focus on Wanda’s son, Billy Maximoff, proved just how much of a pseudo-sequelAgatha All Alongwas toWandaVision.

One could argue thatWandaVisionseason 2 simply was not needed because ofAgatha All Along. After all, Wanda’s story continued inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Vision’s will continue in theupcoming Marvel TV show,Vision Quest, Monica Rambeu’s continued inThe Marvels, and so on. The only real loose threads ofWandaVisionwere the fates of Agatha, Billy Maximoff, and his brother, Tommy.Agatha All Alongaddressed all of these perfectly while still having its own story, characters, and tone, providing a strongerWandaVisionseason 2 thanWandaVisionseason 2 would have been.

Agatha All Along Was Also Able To Repeat WandaVision’s Mystery Trick Better Than Season 2 Could Have

A New Show Meant Old Tricks

One final element worth exploring as a reason whyAgatha All Alongwas better asWandaVisionseason 2 than an official continuation was the storytelling trick used in both shows. I have already madeWandaVision’s mystery box set-up clear, yetAgatha All Alonghad a similar story in that it was revealed Billy Maximoff created the Witch’s Road using his reality-altering powers. However,Agatha All Alongwas never set up as a mystery in the overt, explicit wayWandaVisionwas via the sitcom aspect of its opening episodes.

Therefore,Agatha All Alongpulled the same mystery box trick asWandaVisionin a way that worked, as many did not see it coming.WandaVision, in contrast, teased its mystery from the off, meaning viewers spent the entire show trying to figure out what was going on. IfWandaVisionseason 2 had happened, audiences would have undoubtedly been looking for this kind of mystery almost immediately, lessening its impact a second time around. Thanks toAgatha All Along’s official status as a spin-off though, it pulled offWandaVision’s trick a second time without losing any impact.
