India has aPUBGproblem. Some areas in the country have outright bannedPUBG, with some organizations declaringPUBGaddiction worse than drug addictionin the country. India’sPUBGproblem was highlighted recently in a viral video, originating on the video hosting app Tik Tok, that shows an Indian groom ignoring his wife and guests at his wedding so that he can playPUBG Mobile.
In the video, the groom is shown playingPUBGon his phone, not looking at or speaking to his wife. Someone then attempts to give the groom a present, but it blocks his view of the game, and so he aggressively pushes it away. Unfazed, the groom keeps playingPUBGand ignoring the world around him at his own wedding.
SincePUBG’s popularity has dipped in other areas of the world, largely replaced byFortnite, some may scoff at the idea ofPUBGaddiction. However, the game continues to be massively popular in places like India, and as previously stated, its popularity is seen as a sort of epidemic by some organizations and government bodies.
SincePUBGhas exploded in popularity in India, the game has been the focus of some rather bizarre and extreme viral stories. One of the most notable is a viral Facebook post that claims aman left his pregnant wife to playPUBG. While the content of that post has yet to be verified, seeing videos like this one makes it a little easier to believe.
The impactPUBGhas had on some adults in India has been the source of some concern, but most seem to be more worried about how it may be influencing children in the region. One Indian publication evenaccusedPUBGof turning kids into psychopaths.
While some ofPUBG’s impact is likely being exaggerated, India does seem to have enough of a problem with the game that police have arrested people for playing it. Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how else India reacts to itsPUBGproblem.
