About a couple of years ago, a video containing upwards of30 minutes of gameplay footagefor an unreleased remastered version of the video game developer Rare’sGoldenEye 007on Xbox 360 appeared online, showing that the title could have still held up on last-gen systems. While that project never came to fruition, one intrepid fan has decided to take it upon themselves to bring the first-person shooter into the current era–albeit unofficially–by remaking the entire campaign in Unreal Engine 4.

As seen in the video below from the YouTuber and diehardGoldenEye 007fan known simply as “Ben”, gamers can get a look at how the 3D artist Ben Colclough’s project has progressed thus far with an early preview of the first-person shooter’s Facility level. While the graphics are definitely solid, the main showcase here is the dynamic music system, and one can notice how well the music changes are implemented when players drop from the vents and when they leave the bathroom. Of course, with this being a work in progress, there are only placeholder guard models and no AI in place just yet.

Colclough is calling the projectGoldenEye 25, as it is currently scheduled to be completed alongsideGoldenEye 007’s 25th anniversary in four years from now, which would put the Unreal Engine 4 remake of the game coming out in 2022. But considering the fact that the project appears to be helmed solely by Colclough–withGoldenEye: Sourcecomposer Yannick “GoldenZen” Zennhausen working on the music–there’s always the chance that unforeseen issues crop up during development, causing it to be delayed. Hopefully, this won’t occur, though.

Until Colclough’sGoldenEye 25is officially finished,GoldenEye 007fans at least have the aforementionedGoldenEye: Sourcemod’s multiplayerto tide them over. Of course, should players want the raw, uncut experience of the original, they can always bust out the Nintendo 64 and relive the game in all its former glory.
