Since the project was first announced at E3 2015,Final Fantasy 7 Remakehas been one of the most hotly anticipated games around. However, it seems that fans are going to have to wait a while before they hear anything else of substance about its development.

Tetsuya Nomura, the director ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, spoke to the Japanese press this week about Square Enix’s current projects. While he noted that the game was making good forward progress, it seems clear that the studio has no plans to start its marketing push just yet. Nomura shared his thoughts on why the process might take a little longer before the development team is comfortable with providing more clear cut information:

“Although there are parts [of the game] further along thanKingdom Hearts 3, such as cutscenes, it is unlikely we’ll share information for a while as we switch from mainly external to mainly internal development.”

Square Enix recently announced the decision to minimize the role of external development partners and bring the bulk of development in-house, which Nomura seems to be reiterating with regard toFinal Fantasy 7 Remake. The company began amajor hiring initiativeto bring new talent on board to help with this process, and it seems that the studio is still in the midst of this effort.

It also seems clear that the development ofKingdom Hearts 3is also having an impact on the production of the remake. Nomura is splitting his time between both projects, but there’s also the fact that Square Enix will want to put the focus on the Disney andFinal Fantasycrossover for now as it’sscheduled to release sooner.

On the one hand, a project likeFinal Fantasy 7 Remakedeserves to spend as much time in development as it needs to ensure a high quality end result. However, fans are sure to lose patience sooner or later — especially since the game is slated torelease in several parts, rather than all at once.
