A television adaptation of the critically acclaimed, genre-defying detective RPGDisco Elysiumis in the works.Disco Elysiumdeveloper ZA/UM is teaming with dj2 Entertainment, the production company behind the crowd-pleasingSonic the Hedgehogmovie, to bring the city of Revachol to the small screen.

Disco Elysiumproved itself to be a triumphant dark horse at the 2019 Game Awards, where it walked away with the most awards of the night, including prizes in hotly contested categories such as Best Narrative. The game’s incredibly layered narrative was developed over the course of a decade, starting as a D&D group based on a novel by Karelian-Estonian author Robert Kurvitz, who also served as the title’s lead designer. The game’s story is a murder mystery at heart, but it can also be likened to an alternate-universe period piece with heavy political themes and dashes of sci-fi surrealism.

It’s yet to be seen whether the show will retell the sad, mind-bending journey of Harrier Du Bois (AKA Raphaël Ambrosius Costeau) and Kim Kitsurugi, orchart fresh territory in the rich world of Elysium. Fans could be forgiven for regarding the project with skepticism, as defining one’s identity is a core theme in the narrative, ingeniously explored through player choices that span seemingly mundane decisions and deep moral quandaries.

After its surprise box office win withSonic, dj2 Entertainment has its hands full with video game adaptations. In addition toDisco Elysiumandthe confirmation that aSonicsequel is in the works, the production company is also working on an adaptation of Square Enix’sSleeping Dogsfranchise. Given the tremendous tonal and aesthetic range between each of these properties, the company’s versatility will be put to the test, with the gaming world eagerly watching.
