Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 6.After 12 years,Dexter: Resurrectionhas finally done justice to Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) after the original series andDexter: New Bloodbrushed her off. Hannah McKay was one ofDexter’s most important love interestsin the originalDexter. She brought Harrison to Argentina, raised him for years, and nearly gave Dexter a new life away from his Dark Passenger.
Despite how important she was, Hannah has mostly been disregarded since theending of the originalDexter. Dexter abandoned her,New Bloodkilled her offscreen, and Harrison has always been more angry with Dexter about getting Rita Bennett (Julie Benz) killed by the Trinity Killer. Many fans feel like Hannah has been disrespected byDexterfor over a decade. Now, however,Dexter: Resurrectionhas finally given Hannah the respect she deserves.

Dexter Confirmed That Hannah Was Harrison’s Second Mother After Brushing Her Off In New Blood
InDexter: Resurrectionepisode 6, Dexter and Harrison start talking about Hannah McKay’s funeral while Dexter teaches his son to tie a tie.Dexter then says that Harrison’s mother would be proud of him, and he specifies that he’s talking about “both” of his mothers, meaning Rita and Hannah. It’s the first timeDexterhas ever recognized Hannah aspart of Dexter’s family tree, and she deserved it.
After the ending of the originalDexter, Hannah raised Harrison for over a decade. She died of pancreatic cancer at some point before Harrison reconnected with Dexter, but for all those years, Hannah was Harrison’s mother. Rita may have given birth to him, but Hannah raised Harrison as her own and gave him a good life while she could (and when Dexter wouldn’t).

It’s also the first time Dexter has even hinted at what Hannah means to him. When he learned of Hannah’s death inNew Blood, he kind of brushed the news off without an emotional reaction.Resurrectionhas finally given Dexter a chance to honor Hannah and the effect she had not only on him and Harrison, but on theDexterfranchise as a whole.
Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6 Also Finally Addresses What Rita Bennett Meant To Dexter
Resurrectionepisode 6 didn’t just have a tribute to Hannah McKay, though; it also finally addressed the memory of Rita Bennett. Later on, when Dexter is looking at Prudence’s body at the wake, he has an emotional reaction to it and says that it was the first time he’s been at a funeral since Rita’s. Any emotion from Dexter is a big deal, and this one was caused by Rita.
Rita’s memory has come up a few times inNew BloodandResurrection, but they’ve mostly centered around Harrison. Dexter has apologized for getting her killed, butResurrectionepisode 6 is the first time we’ve seen Dexter have an emotional reaction to Rita since the original series. It may not be a profession of his love, but it is confirmation that Rita still means a lot to Dexter and is capable of getting him to feel emotions.
