One of the knocks against the originalDestinywas that the story ultimately didn’t live up to expectations, with lore often placed behind online and unlockable grimoire cards. One of the main focuses forDestiny 2was to tell a complete and interesting story inside of the gamerather than pushing people to an external websiteto get those details. To help bring people up to speed on what’s going on in this universe, a YouTuber took the time to compile the complete story from the very beginning of the franchise to the start ofDestiny 2.
The lengthy hour and a half video from My Name is Byf starts itsDestinystory in the 21st century, when mankind first discovers a massive globe hovering over Mars. Humanity puts together a three man team to go to the red planet and eventually came across what players know as The Traveler. This led to humanity’s Golden Age, where humanity continued to make new discoveries, lifespans tripled, and peace took over in an effort to explore the stars above.
AsDestinyplayers now know, this era of peace and prosperity wasn’t meant to last as the ambiguous entity known as The Darkness began to encroach into the Milky Way galaxy. Even though Bungie would later admit that itdidn’t quite know what The Darkness truly was, in this story, this enemy went on to undo much of what humanity had accomplished, only to be beaten back by The Traveler. Player guardians take up arms after this massive event, joining a broken world thanks in large part to The Traveler’s dying creation: Ghosts.
Byf continues to go into great detail, unearthing a lot of lore and story elements many players might have glossed over in the past three years of the game. Thankfully, Bungie has heard the feedback and is set to introduce astory that it promises players can followinside of the game. Not only is a cinematic campaign planned, but a memorable cast of characters is also ready to take center stage as well. These include returning characters like Ikora, Zavala, and Cayde-6 while being joined by new allies like the hunter Hawthorne and mysterious sniper Devrim Kay.
