UPDATE: Bungie has since restoredDestiny’s online services for both the original game and its sequel. This required Bungie to bring theDestinyservers completely offline for a couple of hours to perform emergency maintenance. An explanation as to what exactly was causingDestiny’s servers to have issues across both games was not revealed.

Original story follows.

Thousands ofDestinyplayers are currently unable to access either game in Bungie’s popular looter-shooter franchise. The problems with theDestinyservers started the morning of Saturday, January 22, and seem to be impacting both the originalDestinygame as well asDestiny 2. Bungie is aware of the issues and working on a fix, but has not provided a timetable for when fans will be able to access the servers again.

In our own testing on Xbox Series X, we were unable to maintain a solid connection to theDestinyservers. The game allowed us to select ourDestiny 2Guardian, but when attempting to travel to areas like the Tower or anywhere else, we were met with an error about how the game is trying to contact theDestiny 2servers. We were then met with another error message explaining that we were being returned to orbit. The message included a note about checking our own networking setup, but before anyone starts resetting their routers, this is clearly a problem on Bungie’s end.

TheDestinyservers being down right now may be especially frustrating for fans who are hoping to use this weekend to finish up what they need to accomplish onThe Tangled ShorebeforeThe Witch Queenexpansion drops. There’s still about a month to go, but whenThe Witch Queenlaunches on February 22, Tangled Shore content and theForsakencampaign will be tossed in the Vault, no longer accessible to fans of the game.

We will update this post once theDestinyservers have been restored.
