With a massive amount of hype preceding its release back in September of this year,Destiny 2wasdestined for a lucrative 2017, and Bungie’s science fiction shooter sequel seems to have fulfilled its financial fate. As a matter of fact, the video game publisher Activision has now declared the title to be the second best-selling console game for 2017 in North America, based on revenue.

Naturally, withDestiny 2taking second billing in this specific tier for best software sales of the year, another title has to be crowned the best-seller for current generation systems. With that being the case, another Activision first-person shooter property is in the number one slot, withCall of Duty: WW2managing to surpass “$1 billion in sell-through worldwide since its launch,” extending the franchise’s tenure as the top selling console game franchise in North America for nine years running.

In addition to the aforementioned sales feat, based on units,Destiny 2has also become the biggestPC launchin Activision’s publishing history. Not to mention, the sequel has also outsold its direct predecessor,Destiny–of course, this is based on units, too. No doubt, the large and extant PS4 and Xbox One user base from the previous title in the series helped lay the foundation for newcomers to join in on the fun, assisting the sequel in betteringD1in sales.

All things considered, mostDestiny 2fans won’t be surprised at the game’s success as the second best-selling console game for 2017, nor will they bat an eye at the fact that anotherCall of Dutytitle has taken the top spot. What one hopes, though, is that with Activision having experienced such major success with two of its properties this year, the company will wisely invest the profits earned toward refining games' current features, mechanics, and flaws to make the inevitable followups that much better.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
