Sony has officially delayedDays Gone, the PlayStation 4 exclusive third-person zombie action-adventure game, according to a statement made to US Gamer.Days Gonewas previously scheduled to release in late 2018 but is now planned for 2019. No reasons were provided for the delay and no statement from SIE Bend Studio has yet been made. More information is hopefully coming in the months ahead.
The news ofDays Gone’s delay broke after inquiring minds discovered the game’s release date had been changed on its official website. No press release had gone out to accompany the change and no mediate outlets had been notified - it was a zero-fanfare delay. Sony only confirmed the delay after it was asked if the new release date was in fact official and not an accident.
Considering this week has been surprisingly active with regards to video game news, including the announcements of the nextCall of DutyandSuper Smash Bros.titles, it’s the perfect time to sneak in delay news without creating a stir. That’s not to say that Sony intended for the news to go unnoticed; it’s just a matter of fact. Publishers historically prefer delay news to be understated and it seems to have worked out well in that regard forDays Gone.
Since its announcement duringE3 2016,Days Gonehas been one of the PlayStation 4’s most highly anticipated exclusives. That said, Sony has many strong exclusives lined up for the PlayStation 4, includingGod of War,Detroit: Become Human, Insomniac’sSpider-Man, and theShadow of the Colossusremake is already available. There’s always the possibility thatDays Gonewas delayed so as not to crowd the PlayStation 4’s already impressive 2018 line-up.
Moving into 2019 may not be any easier forDays Gone, however. MajorPlayStation 4 exclusivesincluding Hideo Kojima’sDeath Strandingand Naughty Dog’sThe Last of Us 2could very well launch next year. No matter where it’s scheduled,Days Gonewill have to earn its success purely on its own merit and not off the back of the PlayStation 4’s.
