If you’re a fan of Conan O’Brien’s eclectic career and also a fan of video games, there’s no doubt you remember his hilarious and completely original Clueless Gamer segment on his TBS show. Clueless Gamer had a simple premise, which was to let Conan play popular new video games such asThe Witcher 3orGTA 5and “review” them in his own eccentric and comedic fashion. The catch is that, despite having a great appreciation for video games, Conan is terrible at them and has no clue what he is doing, hence the title of the segment.
One of my all-time favorites among these segments was hisWitcher 3review, where he covered arguably thebest RPG of all timeand was completely blown away by some of what he experienced. In particular, one scene left a lasting impression on him, so much so that he even claimedWitcher 3was his favorite game of all time, citing the unicorn sex scene as the primary reason. He later hilariously confirmed this in a Reddit AMA (archived by userFenzke), saying that if they made the game in VR,“you’ll never see me again.”

He May Be Joking, But He’s Not Wrong About Witcher 3
In theoriginal Clueless Gamer segment covering The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (available fromTeam Cocoon YouTube), Conan gets to experience the epic RPG in all its glory, and it’s pretty obvious he truly had no clue what he was in for. From the opening sequence, he’s pretty blown away by the various sexual overtones at play, evengetting “turned on” accidentally by the opening shot of Geralt’s feetwhen you first meet him.
The segment quickly devolves into Conan becoming solely focused on the various “romance” options inThe Witcher 3, and there’s some real comedic gold here if you’re looking for a laugh.The Witcher 3’sinfamous unicorn sex scene, however, takes the cake in terms of hilarious moments during Conan’s segment. This scene left such a lasting impression on him that he even cited it during an AMA some time later as the most memorable game he reviewed on the show. When asked what his favorite game to play on Clueless Gamer was, he replied with the following:
Witcher 3, because I got to have sex on a unicorn. When that game comes out on VR, you’ll never see me again."
For the uninitiated, one of the many different sex scenes inThe Witcher 3occurs between Yennifer and Geralt near the end of the game. After selecting some specific dialogue options, Yen and Geralt get extremely intimate on the back of a unicorn, and Conan’s reaction to said events reflects the shock and surprise most players probably experience seeing this scene for the first time as well.
While The Segment Has A Spiritual Successor, It’s Not Quite The Same Without Conan
As with all good things, Conan’s Clueless Gamer segment did eventually come to an end, which is unfortunate given the unique perspective it offered on video games. Clueless Gamer was a lighthearted and low-stakes approach to video game reviews that didn’t take itself seriously at all, but itstill managed to do a great job introducing video games to a wider audiencethat may not have been interested otherwise. Not only was Clueless Gamer a special occasion for people to see Conan embarrass himself while playing, but it also exposed others to the world of video games in an inviting way.

While Clueless Gamer did eventually get a spiritual successor with theGood Game Nice Trypodcast hosted by Sonya Reid and Aaron Bleyaert, Conan only makes occasional guest appearances on this show.Good Game Nice Try has some excellent gaming content,but it doesn’t quite scratch the same itch that the long-running Clueless Gamer segment once did. There was something special about Conan’s cluelessness, especially when partnered up with celebrities or friends who were actually pretty good at the games being reviewed.
Conan’s Clueless Gamer segment and the unique perspective on video games that it offered will be fondly remembered. It didn’t need to be taken seriously, and above all, it was simply fun to watch. It isn’t often you get to experience a game likeThe Witcher 3for the first time through someone else’s eyes in a meaningful way, and Conan’s ability to make everything funny sets Clueless Gamer apart from other comedic gaming segments.
