Cane Ashby’s plot onThe Young and the Restlesscould recall the golden age of soaps, based on one recurring line of dialogue. It’s likely Cane’s story will already be responsible for somecharacters leavingThe Young and the Restlessthis year. But that’s not what makes him the best part ofThe Young and the Restlesscastright now.
There are plenty ofhidden details aboutThe Young and the Restlesscastto enjoy, but it’s obviously their characters’ secrets that are more compelling.Cane Ashby clearly has several layers to his schemes that he’s not willing to reveal all at once, leaving Genoa City’s finest in prolonged suspense. Confirming one particular suspicion would especially juice up his plan.

The Young & The Restless Cast Keep Referencing Cane’s Hypothetical Weather Control
Multiple Characters Have Uttered The Exact Same Line
Cane and Lily’s relationship inThe Young and the Restlessinitially seemed related to his plan, but it’s become clear that he’s keeping everybody there for something more nefarious. They can’t use their cell phones and they’re told both the roads and train tracks are out, but most of them are fairly certain these are all just Cane Ashby’s deceptions.
However, even some of the Nice invitees who have no reason to trust Cane whatsoever find it difficult to believe that Cane is lying.A few characters have specifically been repeating the argument that “billionaires can’t control the weather”and that Cane couldn’t possibly organize trapping them there so thoroughly. But what if that were actually the most sensible explanation?

Cane Ashby’s Scheme Makes A Lot More Sense If He Actually Is Controlling The Weather
How Else Can Nobody Tell If The Roads And Tracks Are Out?
Even if Billy Flynn’s far from one of thelongest-runningThe Young and the Restlesscast members, he can bring back an old-school type of soap villain sinceCane’s plan only really works if he’s actually causing extended and severe storms in Nice. If the storms being referenced weren’t real, nobody would have cause to believe the roads are out.
Accepting that the storms have really been keeping them there for all this time raises another issue, sinceCane was able to show up in Genoa City at a moment’s notice when air travel should be especially dangerous. If he’s controlling the weather, there’s nothing strange about that. Or, to be precise, it’s strange in the absolutely most perfect way.

The Young & The Restless Is Long Overdue For A Classic Soap Opera Sci-Fi Plot
It’s Never Leaned Into That Direction Quite As Hard As Other Soaps
Aside from the fan theory thatY&R’s Colin Atkinson is secretly alive, there’s not much about Cane’s plan as of yet that falls far outside the realm of typical white-collar crime, albeit with a lot of extra theater. Butsoap operas used to be unapologetically bonkers about throwing in the occasional alien, werewolf, or superhero. Most of them did, anyway.
Even when fantasy-tinged soap opera plots were common enough that the 1970s made two sitcoms about them,The Young and the Restlessnever quite got on board. With the odd exception of an occasional doppelganger or volcano death, it stayed grounded. Giving Cane Ashby weather control would make up for lost time while revisiting the classic era of unhinged soaps.
