Billie Piper’s return toDoctor Whoisn’t that much of a surprise when the franchise’s storied history is considered, but the decision to bring her back still raises some big questions about the saga’s future. There’s a trope that dates back toDoctor Who’s classic erathat, while it doesn’t define the show, has become something of a strange hallmark.

Piper’s presence at theend ofDoctor Whoseason 15implies, but doesn’t confirm, that she is set to take over from Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and lead the show as Sixteen. Best known for her role as Rose Tyler alongsideDavid Tennant’s Tenth Doctor,Piper hasn’t been a series regular since her departure in 2006. That said, she has played Rose in guest appearances since.

Doctor Who’s Repeat Castings Don’t Often Cause Problems

The sci-fi franchise often reuses actors

There are severalDoctor Whoactors who made their franchise debut as a minor characterbefore returning in a more substantial capacity. These repeat castings are almost always explained, and the most common explanation is a genetic connection between both characters to explain their shared face. It’s not a perfect solution, but it works.

Some Notable Examples Of Doctor Who Actors Playing More Than One Franchise Character

One of the most prominent examples of this phenomenon, at least inDoctor Who’s modern era, is Peter Capaldi. The Scottish actor is best known within the franchise for playing the Twelfth Doctor, but first played Lobus Caecilius in “The Fires of Pompeii” and John Frobisher in season 3 of theDoctor Whospinoff,Torchwood.

Billie Piper’s Doctor Who Return Is RTD’s First Repeat Casting Gone Wrong

The Doctor Who showrunner took things a step too far

AlthoughRussell T. Davies isn’t the onlyDoctor Whoshowrunner to reuse actors, he does tend to do it more often than most. Still, his proclivity for returning to a certain group of actors has largely avoided any notable issues. However, bringing Billie Piper back is one recasting too many for Davies.

When an actor returns toDoctor Who, their previous characters tend to fall by the wayside. They remain part of the franchise’s canon, but they’re often easy to forget about for the purposes of fully embracing the actor’s new role. ForBillie Piper’s return at the end of “The Reality War,“that isn’t the case.

Rose Tyler was and is an importantDoctor Whocharacter, traveling with the Doctor for the entirety of seasons 1 and 2 before also coming back to play a big part in season 4. So, bringing Billie Piper back to play any role other than Rose was always going to be a risky move, and it hasn’t paid off.

I’ve not seen many positive reactions to Billie Piper’s surprise comeback via Gatwa’s regeneration scene. The negative response generally has nothing to do with Piper as an actress, but rather the confusing twist ofre-introducing her toDoctor Whofor reasons that seem unclear even to the showrunner.

Doctor Who Risks Becoming A Parody Of Itself With Piper As The Sixteenth Doctor

Billie Piper becoming the Doctor has long been a joke among fans

Billie Piper being cast as the Doctor has been making the rounds of various rumor mills for years. The tabloids have often touted her as the show’s next star each time a new actor is being sourced to take over. That said, fans disagreed with the press and disregarded Piper becoming the Doctor as an option, treating is as more of a running joke.

Davies' decision to recall Piper to the cast could end up withDoctor Whocanonizing what was often discussed as a ridiculous notion.

Although Piper is a very good actress, it’s largely accepted that playing Rose Tyler made her ineligible to also play the Doctor. Still, that very much remains a possibility after Piper’s return in “The Reality War.” As a result, Davies' decision to recall Piper to the cast could end up withDoctor Whocanonizing what was often discussed as a ridiculous notion.

If Doctor Who Season 16 Happens, Billie Piper Can’t Be The Full-Time Sixteenth Doctor

Piper would be a good Doctor, but it would be strange if she stuck around

While it initially seemed as though Billie Piper was taking over from Gatwa on a full-time basis, “The Reality War” withheld information about whom the actress was actually playing. Instead, the credits simply read, “Introducing Billie Piper,” without naming her as the Sixteenth Doctor. So,it’s unclear what the future actually holds for Piper’s return.

Of course, it is still possible that Billie Piper will be the new star of the showifDoctor Whoseason 16 happens, but there’s no guarantee that will be the case. Given how much Davies has toyed with the concept of regeneration in recent years, I thinkthere’s an alternative explanation for Piper’s comeback.

The most logical explanation is that the Doctor does actually look like Rose at the end of “The Reality War,” but I don’t think it would make much sense for the Time Lord to keep that face. Instead, the Doctor is probably using Rose’s face as a transitional appearance during the regeneration process.

I’d like to see Piper as the Doctor, but it would feel far too gimmicky for her to retain the role on a permanent basis. So, I’m convinced a different actor will be chosen to take over after an episode or two. Rumors that Gatwa’s exit was unplanned would support the theory that Piper was brought in to buy theDoctor Whoshowrunner time to find a true successor.
