Sony has unveiledAstro’s Playroom,a new platformer featuring the Astro from the PlayStation VR titleAstro Bot Rescue Mission.Astro’sPlayroomseems to incorporate much of the design philosophy from its predecessor, largely the bright colors and cute robot characters, but seems to be ditching the PlayStation VR restriction.
Astro Bot Rescuemission was an inventive platformer, utilizing the VR headset in a way not many other games have managed to, at least as far as platformers are concerned. While Astro isn’t as much of a PlayStation icon as franchises likeRatchet and Clank, the game was still a fun way to kill some time in VR, and ifAstro’s Playroomis as good as the first, players should have yet another fun platformer to explore.

Better yet, the game will come pre-loaded on thefuturistic-looking PlayStation 5, complimenting its bold design with equally-futuristic robots. It doesn’t seem like there will be VR support for the game, at least that’s been announced, which is a bit unfortunate, considering how innovativeAstro Bot Rescuemission was for PSVR.
Sony specifically mentioned that the game will tap into theDualSense controller’s new features, which likely means the game will excel at haptic feedback and spatial audio. That’s an exciting prospect, as haptic feedback is capable of making games feel significantly more immersive, though time will tell if it’s a simple gimmick or a bonafide feature for the console.
Astro’s Playroomis hardly the biggest announcement Sony made today, that honor likely goes toSpider-Man: Miles Moralesor the newHorizon: Zero Dawn, but it is cool nonetheless, and with it being pre-loaded on consoles, it may very well become a game that many are familiar with. That, however, remains to be seen, as the game could end up being little more than a demo for the PS5’s capabilities — after all, the game takes players through four worlds that are based on the console’s components.
The PS5 reveal was certainly exciting, and packed full of new game announcements. The console is still a ways away, and there’s no word on the PS5 price, but fans should be excited to see what the future holds for the platform.
