It’s always a joy when members of theFireflycast come back together for other projects, and Alan Tudyk has recently revealed that he and his former co-stars from the sci-fi cult classic have been getting ready for an exciting reunion. While theFireflycastisn’t getting back together to make more episodes of the beloved show,Fireflywill likely be heavily involved.
Speaking at his Sunday panel during Denver Fan Expo, whichScreen Rant’s Dani Kessel Odom attended,Tudyk shared information about a new podcast he’s been making with Nathan FillioncalledOnce, We Were Spacemen. While it’s unclear exactly what the podcast will be about, Tudyk did confirm that it won’t just beFireflyactorswho will appear as guests.

Despite lasting just one season,Fireflyis still considered to be one of themost influential sci-fi showsever, and it played a key role in Alan Tudyk’s career. The actor didn’t share many details aboutOnce, We Were Spacemen, but he seemed enthusiastic about his upcoming endeavor.
Audience member: I’d like to know if you could tell us a little bit about Once, We Were Spacemen.
Alan Tudyk: Oh! [Laughs] Right. So, nobody knows this thing because we haven’t…So, Nathan Fillion and I are going to do - I know you’re gonna be like, ‘I’ve never heard of anyone doing this before,’ - but we’re gonna do a podcast. We wanted to, you know, break some ground where we talk to our favorite, uh, sci-fi actors and other actors. People who were onFirefly, people who were not onFirefly, and sometimes we just talk to each other. Thrilling. It is interesting how much we do get along, talking to one another. I hope people enjoy that, but, um, I have no date to tell you when we’re gonna… We’ve done a lot of ‘em. We have, like, a bank ofOnce, We Were Spacemen, [which is] the name of the show. And, when we do finally…You see, Nathan’s kind of in charge of that. He’s kind of in charge of everything. He’s the captain. So, once the captain lets me know what’s going on with that…As it stands, I just show up and do my part.
What Alan Tudyk’s Podcast Announcement Means For The Future Of Firefly
Don’t Expect Firefly to be Back Anytime Soon
Despite the ongoing support forFireflyfrom the show’s devoted fan base, there has been no live-action project within the franchise since 2005’sSerenity. AlthoughAlan Tudyk will be working with Nathan Fillion onOnce, We Were Spacemenin a context that would appear to at least partially revolve aroundFirefly, there’s no sign that the show will be revived as a result.
Instead, the podcast sounds as though it’ll show a larger appreciation for the sci-fi genre, not justFirefly. That being said, with both hosts so strongly associated with one specific show,it stands to reason thatFireflywill be a topic that comes up again and again, especially when more of Tudyk and Fillion’s former co-stars start to appear as guests.
The podcast reveals behind-the-scenes stories and trivia from when the sci-fi show was in active production.
So, rather thanOnce, We Were Spacemensetting up any kind of newFireflystories, what’s more likely is that it will be a nostalgic look back at the episodes that exist as the podcast reveals behind-the-scenes stories and trivia from when the sci-fi show was in active production.
Our Take On Once, We Were Spacemen
Any Kind of Spotlight on Firefly is Good
Fireflyis a great show, so I’m very happy that it sounds like Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion are about to reveal more about how the show was made, or at least share some stories that relate to the show. It’ll also be cool to hear the interactions ofFireflystars who haven’t worked together sinceSerenity.
What’s especially exciting aboutOnce, We Were Spacemenis thatTudyk and Fillion have collaborated a few times sinceFireflyended, and the result is always awesome. Some examples includeThe Rookie,Con Man, andResident Alien, and the actors’ chemistry has remained intact.
The podcast also doesn’t sound like it’ll be limited to talking aboutFirefly, as Tudyk stated in hisScreen Rantinterview that actors from outside the sci-fi genre are slated to appear. I’m sure sci-fi will still be a regularly-revisited topic given the name of theFireflystar’s upcoming podcast.
