There’s an ongoing trend with Mega Evolutions inPokémonthat has lasted for 12 years, but it’s about time Nintendo ends it entirely. Mega Evolutions are a popular gameplay mechanic that isn’t present in every installment in the series, but is beloved among the community. In essence,Mega Evolutions allow certain Pokémon to surpass their own limits and achieve a higher form, augmenting their power and endurance. Only specific creatures can triggerMega Evolutions inPokémon, but the list is expected to increase soon.
This is because the mechanic will make a comeback inPokémon Legends: Z-A, which will take place in Kalos’ Lumiose City – the setting of the Generation 6 games,X and Y, which were the titles that introduced Mega Evolutions. As an expansion of that region, it’s expected that severalMega Evolutions will return inPokémon Legends: Z-A,though there are some rumors about new Mega Evolutions that haven’t been seen in the franchise before.

Some Mega Evolutions Have Sinister Pokédex Entries
The Power Of The Transformation Often Cripples Pokémons’ Bodies
There is, however, a big problem with Mega Evolutions that, luckily, has no connection to the gameplay aspect whatsoever. The issue with the mechanic is that a lot of the Mega Evolutions so far come accompanied by sinister Pokédex entries.Mega Evolutions are cruel inPokémonbecause several of them mention that the creatures overflow with power in a way that causes them physical pain. As shown by Mega Evolution Pokédex entries listed byBulbapedia,Tyranitar’s Mega Evolution sees its back split open due to the power that flows through its body.
Meanwhile, Mega Evolution causes Garchomp’s arms to melt in a way that creates scythe-like arms, and Scizor’s claws become too heavy for it to carry, in addition to making its body melt. Mega Houndoom is unable to withstand its own heat, Mega Aerodactyl feels pain from its transformation, and Mega Alakazam loses all the strength in its muscles.Glalie’s Mega Evolution goes as far as breaking its jaw, making it unable to eat. For many of the Pokémon, Mega Evolutions are terrible burdens on their bodies.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Needs To Cut Back On Terrible Mega Evolution Pokédex Entries
There’s No Need For Mega Evolutions To Be So Cruel To Our Companions
With the return of Mega Evolutions inPokémon Legends: Z-A, I hope that Game Freak cuts back on these unnecessarily terrible Pokédex entries. The mechanic will likely be present somewhat abundantly in the game, soit’d be best if we were able to use Mega Evolutions without the guilt that comes from putting our companions through such savage transformation only for the sake of more power in combat. In the anime, Mega Evolutions aren’t really portrayed as painful, so there’s no reason for this trend to continue with therelease ofPokémon Legends: Z-A.
For now, of course, it’s unclear if Nintendo will continue to feature Pokédex entries for Mega Evolutions and, if so, if they’ll be as cruel as they have been in the past. New entries inLegends: Z-Adon’t erase what we already know based on previous games, but the absence of such brutality could be a way of putting that information in the past and inaugurating a better era for Mega Evolutions in the world ofPokémon, especially for new players who don’t need to have contact with the dark secrets of the franchise.
