After playingStardew Valleyfor over 1,000 hours, Reddit userjojory42finally spotted the difference:rock crabs feature two pixels that represent their eyeson the bottom right side. While jojory42 is far from the first to make this particular discovery, they’ll likely also be far from the last, and some other players had trouble recognizing the difference even with an example. In the top comment,hi_brittysaid they “can’t even see them in this photo zoomed in,” but jojory42 stepped in to provide the more detailed instructions necessary for a eureka moment.

While you can always identify rock crabs by simply attacking everything in sight,knowing how to spot them at a glance saves a lot of timein the long run. You’ll need to kill 60 of them to hit one of theMonster Eradication Goalsat the Adventurer’s Guild, a prerequisite to acquiring the Crabshell Ring that provides a +5 to Defense.
Rock crabs also cast a less substantial shadow than regular rocks, which provides another quick way of spotting them.
