28 Years Laterintroduces audiences to the community on Holy Island, which has survived and even thrived years after the Rage Virus outbreak. Even though they are mostly protected by the causeway which connects them to the mainland, members of the group still have to leave the island to go on scouting missions.

This is exactly what Spike and his father, Jamie, do at the beginning of the film. While he is nervous on his first trip to the mainland, Spike has a lot more confidence at theend of28 Years Later. Spike is a great character in the first film, and will be seen once again in theupcoming sequel to28 Years Later.

Presumably, this means that Jamie and other members of the Holy Island community will also return in28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Even though theending of28 Years Lateris divisive, fans are eagerly waiting to see the continuation of Spike, Jamie, and the other characters' stories. Additionally,I’m curious to see whether28 Years Later: The Bone Templeexplains why the Holy Island residents use bows and arrows to kill the infected.

Why Does The Island Community Only Use Bows & Arrows As Weapons Against The Zombies?

The U.K. Has Been Abandoned By The Rest Of The World

The beginning of28 Years Laterestablishes that many members of the Holy Island community are trained to use a bow and arrow. When Spike and Jamie go to the mainland, this is their main choice of weapon. This makes sense, sinceguns and ammunition are probably no longer common since the United Kingdom has been abandoned by the rest of the world.

In fact, the movie uses footage of medieval warriors using bows and arrows to establish that survivors in the U.K. have basically regressed back in time. However, since the Holy Island community has been around for so long by the time of28 Years Later, I was surprised that not even one gun is seen on the island.

They obviously don’t have many resources and wouldn’t want to attract the infected with the sound of gunfire, but it’s surprising they haven’t collected guns in case of an emergency. For example,if they had a secret stash of guns, the survivors on the watchtower could have used them on the Alpha when it was chasing Spike and Jamie down the causeway.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Return Can Solve The Island’s Weapons Mystery

Are There Any Guns On Holy Island?

In28 Years Later, it’s clear that Jamie, who is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has gone on missions to the mainland many times. Therefore,he knows about the history of the Holy Island community’s hunting practices and the weapons they have available to them.

Because of this, him returning in the sequel will allow28 Years Later: The Bone Templeto explain why the community puts such a heavy focus on bows and arrowsand reveal whether they have guns that they can bring out for emergencies. After all, they may need more powerful weapons if they are going to fight against more infected or even the members of Jimmy’s group in the upcoming sequel to28 Years Later.
